Belmont, NC - Three days after falling at home to Belmont Abbey in overtime, 1-0, the Lincoln Memorial field hockey team prepared for round two with Belmont Abbey, this time on the road in the Tar Hell State. After falling to the Crusaders on Saturday, the Railsplitters moved to 4-8 on the season with a 1-5 mark in conference play. Belmont Abbey was vying to remain in second place in the conference standings behind undefeated and 3rd-ranked Newberry, entering the contest with a 6-4 overall record, boasting a 6-2 mark in conference play.
The first half belonged solely to the home standing Crusaders. Belmont Abbey out shot Lincoln Memorial 6-0 in the first half, taking advantage of four shots on goal on the heels of three penalty corners. The Railsplitters were limited in offensive opportunities, tallying zero shots in the first half. However, the Lincoln Memorial defense did a great job of limiting the opportunities created by the Belmont Abbey offense. Although the Crusaders managed six shots, four of which were on goal, the Railsplitters limited the damage to a single goal, leaving Belmont Abbey with a narrow lead at the half, 1-0.
The Crusaders continued their relentless barrage to begin the second half, adding four more shots in the third quarter, tallying another goal to extend the lead to 2-0 heading into the fourth quarter. The Railsplitters' offensive woes continued in the third quarter, once again being held to zero shots on goal. Belmont Abbey's offense continued to attack, but the Lincoln Memorial defense held up, denying a trio of shots in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. The Crusaders continued to attack, with the Railsplitters battling until the final horn, seeing Belmont Abbey take a 2-0 victory at home to improve to 7-4 (7-2) on the season and Lincoln Memorial move to 4-9 (1-6).
Lincoln Memorial will once again be faced with a tough task this weekend, playing host to the 3rd-ranked Newberry Wolves with the game slated to begin at 12 PM.
