Field hockey falls to 3rd-ranked Newberry at home

Harrogate, TN - Four days after falling to Belmont Abbey on the road, the Lincoln Memorial field hockey team was back in action on its home turf on Saturday afternoon, playing host to the 3rd-ranked team in the nation, the Newberry Wolves. Newberry took a decisive victory on its home field earlier this season against Lincoln Memorial and remained undefeated ahead of Saturday's match up, entering the contest with an unblemished record of 11-0, including a 7-0 mark in conference play. The Railsplitters entered Saturday's game with a 4-9 overall record, including a 1-5 clip in conference play. 

The entirety of the first half was played with the two teams on even footing. Lincoln Memorial maintained aggression in the offensive zone, and locked down the back end on defense. However, in the waning seconds of the opening quarter, the Wolves tallied their first goal of the game, taking a 1-0 lead into the second quarter. Newberry added to its goal total in the second quarter with a penalty goal, extending the lead to 2-0. heading into the halftime break. The Wolves ratcheted up the offensive intensity in the third quarter, pouring on a trio of goals to take a commanding 5-0 lead heading into the final frame. Adding one more goal in the fourth quarter, Newberry secured a 6-0 victory to improve to 12-0 on the season.

Lincoln Memorial was limited in offensive opportunities, tallying three shots for the game, compared to Newberry's 23. The Railsplitters also didn't see a penalty corner opportunity all game. The Wolves tallied seven corner attempts. Goalkeeper Cayla Wiggins added 10 saves to her already conference-leading save total, giving her 93 for the season to lead the conference.

Lincoln Memorial will take to the road on Tuesday, traveling to Wingate, NC for a match up with the Wingate Bulldogs before finishing the season with back-to-back home games against Barton and Converse.
