Field hockey falls to Wingate on the road

Wingate, NC – Three days after falling at home to 3rd-ranked Newberry at home, the Lincoln Memorial field hockey team took to the Tar Heel State on Tuesday for a midday match up with the Wingate Bulldogs. Earlier this season, Wingate took a hard-fought contest in Harrogate, claiming a narrow 2-1 victory. Lincoln Memorial entered the contest with an overall record of 4-10, including a 1-6 mark in conference play. Wingate entered the game with a 7-5 overall record, and a 4-4 record in conference play.
The Railsplitters' offensive woes spilled into the match up with the Bulldogs. Lincoln Memorial has been unable to convert an offensive opportunity into a goal since Oct. 8 on the road at 3rd-ranked Newberry. Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the closing seconds of the first quarter, adding the game's first goal. The Bulldogs turned up the heat in the offensive zone in the second quarter, firing off five shots, but the Railsplitters' defense held in the second quarter, limiting the damage to a single goal in the first half.

Wingate maintained control of the game through the third quarter, adding another goal to its total, taking a 2-0 lead as the game shifted into the final frame. The Bulldogs had an opportunity to extend the lead to 3-0 with a penalty stroke, but freshman goalkeeper Cayla Wiggins shut down the attempt, leaving the score at 2-0 with time winding down. Lincoln Memorial was unable to find any offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter, falling to the Bulldogs, 2-0.

The Railsplitters will wrap up the regular season at home with back-to-back home games. Lincoln Memorial will host Barton College on Saturday for Senior Day before finalizing the regular season at home against Converse on Halloween.
