Field hockey finishes regular season with home win over Converse

Harrogate, TN – There was nothing scary about Lincoln Memorial field hockey's game at home against Converse on Halloween night. Already headed to the postseason for the first time in program history, the Railsplitters were seeking to send their seniors out with a win in their final game on their home turf. The last time the two teams played in Harrogate, Lincoln Memorial took a narrow victory. The Railsplitters entered the game with an overall record of 5-11 with a 2-7 mark in conference play. Converse entered the game with an 8-7 overall record with a 5-4 mark in conference play and were seeking seeding position for the conference tournament.

Lincoln Memorial played spooky good in the first period, taking clear command of the game behind a pair of goals by Lise Holla. Goalkeeper Cayla Wiggins shut the door on every attempt the Valkyries had in the offensive zone, tallying a first half shutout. It was the first time in the series' history that the Railsplitters scored multiple goals against the Valkyries. The second quarter was much tamer. Although Converse amped up the offensive intensity, the Lincoln Memorial defense held, maintaining a 2-0 lead at the half.

Although there were a multitude of opportunities for both teams in the third quarter, neither team was able to turn the scoreboard over, leaving the Railsplitters in control 2-0 heading into the final frame of action. In the fourth quarter, the Valkyries found their first goal of the game on a penalty stroke, cutting the lead in half, 2-1 with less than 12 minutes remaining. Faced with a second penalty stroke midway through the fourth quarter, Wiggins came up with a huge save to keep the momentum and scoreboard in favor of Lincoln Memorial. The Railsplitters held on through a fervent offensive attack from the Valkyries, holding on to secure their second straight home victory over Converse.
