Hartsville, SC - Three days after falling on the road at Converse, the Lincoln Memorial field hockey team remained in the Palmetto State, traveling to Harstville, SC for a match up with the Coker Cobras. Lincoln Memorial was seeking its first ever win against Coker. In the three previous match ups, the Cobras won all three by a combined score of 6-2. However, the last two games went into overtime with the Railsplitters falling just short each time. That all changed on Tuesday night when Lincoln Memorial took down the Coker on the road, 2-1, setting a new program record for wins in a season. With its first season of competition in 2022, the Railsplitters field hockey program has been growing competitively year by year. In her first year at the helm, head coach Marnie Reidell led Lincoln Memorial to a program-best three wins, which all came in succession in 2024. Now in her second year, Reidell has led the Railsplitters to yet
another program record, claiming four wins through 10 games.
Both defenses held strong in the first half, leaving the score knotted 0-0 heading into the half. The front line of the Lincoln Memorial defense made it impossible for Coker to find any rhythm in the offensive zone, forcing the Cobras into zero shots in the first half. Paired with a strong offensive attack, the Railsplitters dictated the pace of the game throughout the first half. Although Lincoln Memorial managed a trio of shots in the first quarter, Coker goalkeeper Eve Sekscinski stopped all three attempts to keep her team in it.
Both teams turned up the offensive intensity in the second half. Less than two minutes into the second half,
Naomi Spangler, a new addition to the team, scored her first career goal with an assist from
Guadalupe Montaldo to give Lincoln Memorial a 1-0 lead. However, less than three minutes later, Coker connected on the equalizer to knot the game at 1-1. The score held as the game spilled into the final frame of action. Much like the start of the third quarter, the Railsplitters came out firing fast, finding the game-winning goal less than three minutes into the fourth quarter when
Jolie Plaisier found the back of the cage to give Lincoln Memorial a 2-1 lead. With Coker emptying the net late, the Railsplitters held on defensively to secure the program record setting victory, moving to 4-6 on the season and claiming their first conference win of the season.
