Young Harris, GA -- One day after falling in a hard-fought game against North Georgia, the Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team was back in action against Georgia College and State University, seeking its first win of the young season.
The two teams battled on even footing throughout the first half. Neither team could find separation in the opening minutes. The score swelled to 13-10 in the first five minutes of action, favoring Lincoln Memorial. The Bobcats continued to battle, taking a 19-18 lead on the heels of a 9-5 run. The score inevitably swung back in favor of the Railsplitters, 29-28, with 7:37 remaining in the half. Georgia College knotted the game at 31-31 with 6:21 left on the clock. An 11-5 run saw Lincoln Memorial take its largest lead of the game to that point, 42-36, with just over three and a half minutes remaining in the first half. The Railsplitters held onto the lead, taking a 45-40 advantage into the locker room at the half. There were nine lead changes and six ties in the first half. Lincoln Memorial shot 50% from the floor in the first half, posting a 44% mark from long range. The Railsplitters also held a rebounding advantage after the first half, 13-9. The Lincoln Memorial bench was phenomenal in the first half, out scoring the Georgia College bench 25-10 while forcing the Bobcats into 10 first half turnovers. The Railsplitters made the most of second opportunity baskets, scoring 10 points on second chance baskets, due to the fact they dominated the offensive glass 7-2.
The Lincoln Memorial lead swelled to eight points to start the second half, 48-40. However, Georgia College responded with a 12-3 run to regain the lead, 52-51, with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game. The game took on the feel of the first half as both teams once again began to trade buckets, seeing the score knotted at 56-56 with 12 minutes left on the clock. An 11-4 run propelled the Railsplitters to a 67-60 lead as the clock crept below nine minutes remaining. The Lincoln Memorial defense continued to play sound defense, taking a double digit lead, 70-60 with seven minutes remaining in regulation. A 9-4 run from the Bobcats cut the score back to within two possessions, 74-69. The trend continued as time began to dwindle, seeing the Railsplitters maintain a 79-75 lead with under a minute and a half remaining in the game. Georgia College cut the lead to just two points with less than a minute remaining in the game, 79-77. The teams traded free throws, seeing Lincoln Memorial secure an 81-78 victory.
There were 11 lead changes and 13 ties throughout the game. Georgia College won the rebounding battle by a narrow margin 35-30, but Lincoln Memorial's bench out scored Georgia College 41-17 throughout the game.
