Red-hot Railsplitters wipe out Wasps in Virginia

Emory, VA – Three days after defeating Newberry at home, the 7th-ranked Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team was on the road Wednesday night in Emory, VA seeking a regular season sweep of the Wasps and to improve its winning streak to five games. The Railsplitters entered the game with an overall record of 18-3 with a 16-2 mark in conference play, resting atop the South Atlantic Conference standings. Inversely, Emory & Henry entered the game at the bottom of the conference standings with an overall record of 5-18, including a 3-16 mark in conference play.

Lincoln Memorial controlled things from the jump, starting the game with an 8-2 lead by forcing three turnovers in the first three minutes of the game. Emory & Henry came storming back on the heels of a 10-3 run to take its first lead of the game 12-11 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Trailing 15-12, Osmar Garcia-Araujo finished through contact at the rim and connected on the ensuing free throw to give the Railsplitters a 16-15 advantage. Lincoln Memorial extended its lead to 26-17 with a 10-2 run spearheaded by two Thomas Allard three pointers. The score grew 31-23 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half.

The Wasps began to heat up from long range, going on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit back to within five points, 37-32. Wes Enis connected on a three pointer with just over three minutes left in the first half to give the Railsplitters an eight-point advantage, 40-32. The teams matched one another bucket-for-bucket over the final three minutes, seeing Lincoln Memorial take a 49-41 advantage into the locker room at the halfway point.

The Railsplitters shot a blistering 62.1% from the floor in the first half and forced nine turnovers that led to 13 points. Lincoln Memorial dominated the paint 30-14, tallied three blocks, and totaled eight assists on 18 made baskets. Enis led the charge with 13 first half points. Allard added 11 points, including a pair of three pointers. Garcia-Araujo was a perfect 3-for-3 in the first half, totaling nine points. Jordan Walters was also perfect from the field in the first half, going 4-for-4 from the floor. He also hauled in six rebounds.

Lincoln Memorial started the second half with pedal to metal, scoring six points in the first minute of action, taking a 55-41 lead. The Wasps' first points of the second half came from the free throw line. Emory & Henry didn't score from the field until 16:23 left in the game when the Wasps converted a four-point play to cut the deficit to 59-47 after the Railsplitters opened the second half on a 10-2 run. The score ballooned to 68-54 as the clock crept below 13 minutes. In the blink of an eye, Lincoln Memorial's lead grew to 20 points, 80-60 with nine and a half minutes remaining in the game.

Emory & Henry managed to cut the lead back to within 20 points at 86-68 with just over five minutes remaining before Enis extended the lead beyond 20 points once again with a deep three pointer. Lincoln Memorial continued to pour it on while shooting a red-hot percentage from the floor for the game, taking a 95-76 lead with less than three minutes left in the game. The Railsplitters crested the century mark with just under a minute remaining, eventually securing a 102-84 victory.

Wes Enis led all scorers with 28 points and six rebounds. He was followed by Osmar Garcia-Araujo with 18 points on a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. Thomas Allard added 16 points behind a trio of three pointers. Elyjah Freeman added 13 points and four rebounds. EJ Smith finished with 10 points, seeing five Railsplitters in double figures. Jordan Walters added eight points and six rebounds. Gavin Aydellote added five points, going 2-of-2 from the floor. Connor Jordan and Babacar Thiam added two points apiece, all from the charity stripe.

Lincoln Memorial shot a fiery 64.9% from the field including a 46.7% clip from downtown. The Railsplitters forced 15 turnovers that led to 21 points, dominated the paint 58-40, and assisted 17 times on 37 made buckets.
With the victory, Lincoln Memorial improved to 19-3 on the season with a 17-2 mark in conference play.
