Wingate, NC – One day after falling in game one of the three game series with the Wingate Bulldogs in Wingate, NC, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team took to the diamond on Saturday for a double-header to determine the series.
Wingate wasted no time in getting a jump on Lincoln Memorial. After retiring the Railsplitters in succession, the Bulldogs added three runs on a three-run long shot to take a quick 3-0 lead after one. Wingate once again quickly sat down Lincoln Memorial's first three batters in the top of the second before adding another run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 4-0. For the third consecutive inning, the Railsplitters went down 1-2-3, seeing Wingate assume the box. The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the third inning to further extend the lead to 5-0 heading into the fourth inning.
The Railsplitters began to claw back in the fourth inning. Following a single to right field from
Chris Hall,
Alex Kowalski connected on a two-run missile to cut the deficit to 5-2. However, a pair of hits in the bottom of the fourth led to another pair of runs for Wingate, seeing the score balloon to 7-2. Both teams tallied a hit apiece in the fifth inning, but neither was able to secure another run, seeing the score remain 7-2 heading into the sixth inning. Lincoln Memorial added four hits in the sixth inning to drive in two runs. Following a double from
Kasten Harvey, Kowalski once again delivered at the plate, connecting on a single through the left side to drive in Harvey, cutting the score to 7-3. Following a single from
Trace Simmons,
Archer Wong-Shasteen distributed a sac-fly, allowing Kowalski to take home and further cut into the Wingate lead, 7-4. Although the Bulldogs managed a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning, the Railsplitters kept them off the board, leaving the score at 7-4 heading into the seventh inning.
Kowalski maintained his hot day at the plate in the top of the seventh, connecting on his second home run and third hit of the day. The solo-shot homer cut the lead to just two runs late in the game, 7-5. However, a pair of hits allowed Wingate to extend its lead back to three runs, 8-5. Lincoln Memorial was unable to chip any further into the Wingate lead. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring the score to its final, 11-5, seeing Wingate secure the series ahead of the third and final game.
In the third and final game of the series, Lincoln Memorial was seeking to avoid the 3-0 sweep in the Tar Heel State. In the top of the first inning,
Kasten Harvey connected on a solo shot home run, the 34th of his career, moving him into tied for first place all-time in career home runs at Lincoln Memorial, giving the Railsplitters a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Wingate knotted the game 1-1. Neither team added to the run total in the second inning, seeing the game remain tied heading into the third inning. In the top of the third inning, Harvey became Lincoln Memorial's all-time career home run leader with the 35th home run of his career and his second of the day, giving the Railsplitters a 2-1 lead heading into the third inning. Neither team added to its run total in the third, seeing the game move into the fourth inning with the Railsplitters leading 2-1. Some great base running from
CJ Dugan and an error from Wingate saw the Railsplitters' lead increase to 3-1 in the fourth inning.
However, the Bulldogs drew back to within a run with a homer in the bottom of the fourth, bringing the score to 3-2. Lincoln Memorial failed to separate any further in the top of the fifth inning. Wingate seized the opportunity in the bottom of the inning by adding a pair of runs to take a 4-3 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Railsplitters managed a pair of base runners in the sixth, but a double play saw the Bulldogs retire the side to take over on offense leading 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Wingate extended its lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Down to its last three outs, Lincoln Memorial needed to respond. With
Brooks Hagedorn and Kevin Fernande on base,
Chris Hall doubled down the right field line to advance Fernandez to third and score Hagedorn, bringing the score to 6-4 in the top of the seventh. With Hall and Fernandez on base,
Trace Simmons doubled to left center and drove in both Hall and Fernandez to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the bottom of the final frame. The Railsplitters defense bent, but didn't break in the bottom half of the inning, seeing the game go into extras in the eighth.
With
Caleb Jordan and Hagedorn on base, Fernandez singled to left field to drive in Jordan, giving the Railsplitters a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lincoln Memorial added another pair of runs on a Wingate error, taking a 9-6 lead. Simmons then added another double, further extending the Railsplitters lead to 10-6. The Bulldogs took over on offense needing four runs to extend the game and five to win. Wingate added two runs on bases-loaded walks, but failed to cut any further into the lead, seeing Lincoln Memorial secure a 10-8 game three victory to avoid the sweep.
