Baseball falls to Trevecca Nazarene on the road Tuesday

Nashville, TN – Three days after claiming the conference series against 9th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, 2-1, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back on the road Tuesday, traveling to the home of country music for the second match up with the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans this season. The Railsplitters blasted the Trojans 15-5 at home in late February.

Tuesday's game favored the home standing Trojans from the jump. Lincoln Memorial was unable to find a hit or run in the top of the first inning. Trevecca took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on the heels of a pair of hits. The second inning was similar to the first inning for the Railsplitters; however, it was the best inning of the game for the Trojans. Lincoln Memorial was once again unable to tally a hit or run, seeing Trevecca take a commanding 6-0 lead after adding four runs on two hits in the bottom of the second. Caleb Jordan was the first Railsplitter of the afternoon to tally a hit, singling to center field in the top of the third inning. Jordan stole second before Chris Hall was walked, seeing Lincoln Memorial with a pair of base runners for the first time of the afternoon. Kasten Harvey later singled through the left side to drive in Jordan, giving the Railsplitters their first run of the game. The Trojans were able to hold Lincoln Memorial to just one run, taking a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the third. Trevecca managed another pair of runs in the bottom of the third with three hits, extending the lead to 8-1 heading into the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth, trailing 8-1, CJ Dugan was walked to give the Railsplitters a base runner. Later in the inning, Jordan once again delivered at the plate, doubling to right-center to drive in Dugan, cutting the score to 8-2. The game moved into the bottom of the fourth inning and for the first time during the game, the Trojans were unable to tally a run, seeing the score remain 8-2 heading into the fifth inning. The game remained knotted at 8-2 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Trevecca added another run to its total to increase the lead to 9-2 heading into the eighth inning. Joey LaMattina got things started in the eighth inning with a single. Dugan doubled down the left field line to put runners on the corners for Lincoln Memorial. Kevin Fernandez drove in LaMattina with a ground-out on the following at-bat. With Dugan on third, Jordan grounded out to the first baseman, seeing Dugan take home, cutting the lead to 9-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Railsplitters' defense made quick work of the Trojans in the bottom of the eighth to give themselves one more chance to battle back and tie the game or take the lead. Down to its last three outs, Lincoln Memorial was unable to complete the comeback, falling 9-4 and moving to 19-15 on the season. The Railsplitters will be back at home this weekend for a conference series with Anderson on Friday and Saturday.
