Men's Lacrosse Falls To Newberry

Newberry, SC - The Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team falls to the Newberry Wolves Saturday afternoon 10-18. 

Newberry starts the scoring in the first quarter as Galt (Rodgers) scores with 14:54 remaining. Three minutes later, the Railsplitters add their first goal of the mach with Jenson Jones scoring his first goal of the day with 11:58 remaining and Rhodes Conroy earning the assist. Quickly after with 9:43 remaining, Halliwell (Vollans) regains the lead for Newberry. LMU responds back and ties up the match for the second time as Alex Winters records his first goal with 8:49 remaining, unassisted. The Wolves then post a 5 goal scoring run: Vigar (Halliwell) with 4:50 remaining, Vollans (Rodgers) with 4:50 remaining, Vigat with 2:14 remaining, Maclean with 1:41 remaining, and Halliwell (Andrews) with 0:33 remaining. The score going into the second quarter would be 2-7 with Newberry in the lead. 

The Wolves once again gets things started in the second as Vigar (Vollans) adds a goal with 9:34 remaining. The Railsplitters then post their first scoring run as Gavin Reid tallies his first goal of the match with 8:24 remaining and Winters getting the assist, followed by Alex Wegrzyn recording his first goal with 6:58 remaining with Conroy earning the assist. Newberry finishes out the quarter with 3 more goals: Hallowell (Andrews) with 6:00 remaining, Vollans (Halliwell) with 5:52 remaining, and Yost (Vigar) with 2:29 remaining to make the score going into halftime 4-11. 

Like the first two quarters, Newberry starts teh scoring with Snow (Nicholson) scoring with 13:12 remaining, followed by a Railsplitter goal by Calix Simonson scoring with 12:26 remaining and Reid earning the assist. Newberry scores quickly after that as Vivar (Vollans) scored with 12:04 remaining. Three minutes later, Winters secures the brace with his second goal of the match with 9:44 remaining. The back-and-forth scoring continues as Caiazzo scores for Newberry with 6:22 remaining and Reid posting his second goal of the match for LMU with 4:55 remaining, securing the brace. Newberry finishes out the quarter as Vollan (Vigar) scores with 3:07 remaining and Halliwell (Vollans) tallying a goal with 2:28 remaining, making the score 7–16 with Newberry in the lead going into the fourth and final quarter.

Lincoln Memorial begins the scoring in the fourth quarter as Connor Stevens scores his first goal match with 12:28 remaining, unassisted. Newberry adds their last two goals of the match on the board with Barrett (Goins) recording a goal at 10:48 remaining and  registering a goal with 9:10 remaining. The Railsplitters shorten Newberry's lead, as Aiden Smith pieces together his first goal of the match with 3:23 remaining and Reid securing the hat trick with his third goal of the match with 2:23 remaining and Jensen Jones earning the assist. Despite LMU's late efforts in the fourth quarter, Newberry takes the win 10-18.

Reid leads the team in points with 4 points for 3 goals and 1 assist, followed by Winters with 3 points for 2 goals and 1 assist. Conroy and Jones both finish the afternoon with 2 points with Conroy tallying 2 assists and Jones posting 1 goal and 1 assist. Stevens, Simonson, Smith, Wegrzyn all finish the match with 1 point as they all score 1 goal each. Winters led the team in ground balls with 2 and John Lombel was the team-leader in cause turnovers with 3.Brixten McKenzie won 8 face offs and Jayden Herman recorded 10 saves on the day.

As a team Lincoln Memorial posted 33 shots, which 20 being on goal, 10 saves, 14 successful clears, 18 ground balls, 13 won face offs, 4 extra man opportunities with 2 resulting in goal, and 7 caused turnovers. 

With the loss, Lincoln Memorial moves to 4-10 overall and 1-8 in conference play. 

Third next match will be the regular season finale as a travel to Emery, VA two face Emory Henry on Wednesday, April 23 at 6 pm.
