Harrogate, TN – One week after taking two of three games on the road at Coker, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back in action on Saturday, playing host to the 6th-ranked Catawba Indians. Lincoln Memorial entered the game sitting in seventh in conference standings with a 24-20 overall record, including a 13-14 mark in conference play. Catawba maintained the top spot, sitting first in the conference, bolstering an overall record of 33-12, including a 22-5 mark in conference play.
The Railsplitters got off to a good start defensively. Although Catawba managed a hit to start the inning, Lincoln Memorial retired the next three batters to force the game into the bottom of the first. The Railsplitters went down in order, moving the game into the second inning with the scoreboard reading goose eggs. The Catawba Indians managed the game's first run on the heels of two hits in the top of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. Lincoln Memorial once again went down 1-2-3, seeing the game move into the third inning with Catawba narrowly in control, 1-0. Aside from issuing a walk in the top of the third, the Railsplitters controlled the top of the inning to hold the Catawba Indians off the scoreboard for the inning, Although Lincoln Memorial managed a hit in the bottom of the third, the Railsplitters were unable to add a run, leaving Catawba with a 1-0 lead moving into the fourth inning.
The game took a dramatic swing in the top of the fourth inning when the Catawba Indians poured on a flurry of runs to take a 6-0 lead behind five hits in the inning. Lincoln Memorial got a slight spark in the bottom of the fourth with hits from
Alex Kowalski and
Sam Mast, but were unable to capitalize, leaving Catawba firmly in control, 6-0, moving into the fifth inning. The fifth inning was over in a flash as both teams retired in succession. The Railsplitters managed to hold the Catawba Indians scoreless in the top of the sixth and managed a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning, but were still unable to chip into the lead, seeing Catawba remain in control, 6-0, as the game spilled into the seventh inning. The Catawba Indians regained their footing offensively in the top of the seventh inning, adding four more runs behind six hits to take a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Railsplitters were unable to add a run in the bottom of the seventh, forcing a run rule.
Lincoln Memorial will have a chance to take the series on Sunday following Senior Day festivities with first pitch slated for 1 PM with the final game of the series and regular season to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
