Baseball run-rules Bluefield State

Harrogate, TN – Three days after falling in three-game weekend series against the Anderson Trojans, the Lincoln Memorial baseball team was back in action at Lamar Hennon Field against Bluefield State for its VS Cancer dedication game. The Railsplitters were seeking to exact their revenge against the Big Blue for a walk-off loss earlier in the season. Lincoln Memorial entered the game with a 20-17 overall record, including a 10-11 mark in conference play. Bluefield State traveled to Harrogate with a 3-27 record overall.

The game began as a pitcher's duel, as Cooper Jones shoved the first three innings of the game, allowing only two hits, no runs, and no earned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts. The score sat knotted at goose eggs through two and a half innings before Lincoln Memorial exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third. Kevin Fernandez got things started with a double, followed by a single from Archer Wong-Shasteen. Chriss Hall was then walked to load the bases. On the ensuing at-bat, a wild pitch allowed Fernandez to take home, scoring the first run of the game to give the Railsplitters a 1-0 lead. Alex Kowalski then added to the run total with a ground-out to shortstop to drive in Wong-Shasteen. Sam Mast was walked before Trace Simmons singled to the pitcher to drive in Hall. Simmons stole second before CJ Dugan was walked, allowing Brooks Hagedorn to drive in a pair of runs with a ground-rule double. At the plate for the second time in the third inning, Fernandez was walked before Won-Shasteen was walked with loaded bases, seeing another run come home, extending the Railsplitters lead to 6-0 after three innings.

AJ Hootman took the mound to start the fourth inning, retiring three straight batters by strikeout, allowing Lincoln Memorial to take over on offense. Following a lead-off double from Kasten Harvey and Kowalski being hit by pitch, Mast singled to left field to drive in Harvey. Simmons then singled to shortstop to load the bases. Hagedorn was then walked, seeing another run walked in for the Railsplitters. On the following at-bat, Fernandez flew out on a sac-fly to drive in Mast, extending the lead to 9-0. Although Bluefield State managed a pair of hits, they failed to add a run, seeing the game move into the bottom of the fifth inning. Lincoln Memorial added a quartet of runs in the bottom of the fifth, further extending the lead to 13-0 heading into the sixth inning. After holding the Big Blue scoreless yet again, the Railsplitters continued to pour it on, increasing the lead to 17-0 with a pair of homers in the bottom of the sixth. Fernandez ripped a solo shot, followed by a three-run laser from Mast to extend the lead to 17-0 heading into the top of the seventh. Although the Big Blue added a run in the top of the seven, it wasn't enough, seeing the Railsplitters imposed a run-rule, claiming victory in seven innings.
