Women's Soccer Dominates The Warriors

Central, SC – The Lincoln Memorial women's soccer team defeated the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University Wednesday evening for their second win of the season. 

LMU started to create scoring opportunities from the very beginning, as Ellie Snyder produced the first shot on goal of the evening in the 4th minute, saved by SWU's goalkeeper, followed by a blocked shot from Sophia Berglund in the 5th minute. Possession was traded a few times throughout the next eight minutes, but ultimately the Railsplitters kept pushing to their attacking third as Viktoria Filsner put off a low shot on goal, also saved by the keeper. LMU continued with the offensive mindset with Edie Wilds taking a shot in the 19thminute, wide. Lincoln Memorial was finally able to put a goal in the back of the net and begin their lead as Jade Brown passed the ball through SWU's backline, giving Filsner the room to run onto the ball and shoot the ball low past the keeper in the 25th minute to give Lincoln Memorial the 1-0 lead. In the 33rd minute, Jade Brown first took a shot on goal, followed by a powerful shot by Hannah Stafford in the 34th minute that hit the top right corner over the SWU goalkeeper's head, which gave the 2-0 advantage to LMU. The team continued to build onto the momentum; a little over a minute later in the 35th minute, Hannah Stafford passed the ball into the feet of Ellie Snyder, and she shot the ball low out of the goalkeeper's reach to extend the Railsplitter's lead 3-0. The scoring streak continued as in the 42nd minute, Stafford was able to settle the ball off of a corner kick to allow Donna van der Zalm to run onto it and give LMU their fourth goal of the match to make the score 4-0. Along with the team's offensive attack, Lincoln Memorial is also stay strong defensively as SWU's first shot of the match didn't come until the 43rd minute of the match, which was blocked. As the clock hit 0:00, the two teams went into halftime with Lincoln Memorial having the 4-0 advantage over Southern Wesleyan.

In the first half, Lincoln Memorial dominated in every category as they upped SWU in shots (10-1), shots on goal (8-0), corner kicks (4-1), and goalkeeper Emma Cooke didn't face any shots on goal in the first half. 

The Warriors started to contribute offensively as they were able to get their first shot on goal of the match in the 47th minute, which gave Emma Cooke her first save of the evening. Lincoln Memorial was quick to respond as Snyder took two shots: one in the 49th minute, blocked, and one in the 51st minute, saved. Snyder's attempts were followed by scoring opportunities by Brown and Wilds in the 52nd minute, blocked and saved, respectively, and van der Zalm and Kenzie Zimmers in the 53rd minute, both blocked. SWU recorded their second shot of the half in the 61st minute, high. Lincoln Memorial was able to get across to their attacking third quickly, as Stafford put off a shot high and left in the 62nd minute. The Railsplitters extended their lead to 5 goals as Kenzie Zimmers was able to get the ball low and past the keeper in the 64th minute to make the score 5-0. In the 68th minute, Snyder took a shot, and minutes later in the 71st minute, Filsner recorded a shot on goal. LMU continues to push into the backline of the Warriors as Stafford took a high shot to the left in the 76thminute.  SWU created some last-minute attempts as a shot was high and right in the 86th minute. In the 87thminute, Maya Patel attempted to extend their lead as she took a shot in the 87th minute, blocked. The last scoring attempt of the game came from SWU as a shot on goal was recorded in the 89th minute, saved by Cooke. The final score 5-0 gave Lincoln Memorial their second win of the season and shutout of the season.

There ended up being 5 five different goal scorers for Lincoln Memorial, as Snyder, Zimmers, Filsner, van der Zalm, and Stafford each had one goal. Stafford led in assists with two and Brown followed with one assist. Snyder led in shots on goal with 5, and Snyder and Filsner recorded team-high 3 shots on goal. Emma Cooke played all 90 minutes in goal and earned herself two saved and her second shutout of the season. 

Like the first half, LMU was able to come out on top in every category, as Lincoln Memorial quadrupled SWU's shot attempts with 22 and their shots on goal with 12 and nearly had double-digit corner kicks with 9. 

With the win, the Railsplitters improve to 2-0-1 on the season. 

Lincoln Memorial will begin conference play on Saturday, September 13th as they travel to Hickory, NC to face the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne at 1 pm.
