Salisbury, NC – The Lincoln Memorial men's soccer team defeat ranked #13 Catawba Saturday afternoon 3-2.
The Catawba Indians quickly attacked the LMU backline as the first shot of the game for Catawba came in the 1
st minute, blocked. Back-to back shots for Catawba followed in the 5
th minute, blocked and saved by
Daniel Benedek Miklosi.
Lincoln Memorial was able to get the ball to their attacking end several times, but was taken away before any shots were fired. LMU's first offensive threat of the match came in the 14
th minute, shot by
Gian-Carlo Kama, which was saved by the Catawba goalkeeper.
Catawba's next on-target shot resulted in a goal in the 18
th minute, scored by Melo, assisted by Venaria. The Railsplitter defense continued to be pushed as Catawba's second goal came from about 30 feet out in the 22
nd minute by Zapata.
Lincoln Memorial was able to bounce back from the two goal deficit in the 29
th minute as
Thomas Chao took a shot, hit the left post, and Kama followed up and put the ball in the back of the net to make the score 1-2.
For the next ten minutes, the Railsplitters are able to silence the Catabwa offense and score the equalizer in the 38
th minute, as
Ronan O'Mahony Blondel sends a through ball for
Hays Adams to run onto and score their second goal of the day to make the score even at 2-2. They were able to keep the momentum until halftime where the score was 2-2.
Lincoln Memorial continued pushing offensively like at the end in the first half, as an off-target O'Mahony Blondel shot is followed by a corner kick taken by O'Mahony Blondel in the 48
th minute in which Kama is able to score a header off of to give LMU the first lead of the match 3-2.
The Railsplitters produced several shots on goal for the next 20 minutes by
Enrique Martin and
Christopher Ramos, and they also restricted Catawba from creating any shot opportunities. Catawba had two chances in the 71
st and one in the 75
th minute minute, but they were blocked saved by Benedek Miklosi.
Catawba's closet chance to a goal in the second half came in the 80
th minute, where a shot hit the crossbar and the blocked by a Railsplitter.
Catawba produced some last-minute attempts in the last three minutes to equalize with three shots, two off-target and one blocked. With Catawba being unable to score, Lincoln Memorial defeated a top 15 opponent Catawba 3-2.
Kama led the team with two goals, which includes one game-winning goal, and Adams followed with one goal. O'Mahony Bondel was the team-leader in assists with two and Chao recorded one. Kama led in shots and shots on goal with three, and goalkeeper Benedek Miklosi played all 90 minutes in goal and registered three saves.
Lincoln Memorial was outshot by Catawba 11-15, but LMU produced more shots on goal with six. LMU doubled Catawba's corner kicks with six, and each team recorded three saves.
With the win, Lincoln Memorial improves to 2-3 overall and undefeated 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Railsplitters will cut Catawba's three game win streak as the Catawba Indians drop to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
LMU will look to continue to build as they face the University of Tampa on Wednesday, September 24
th for a neutral site match in Columbus, GA at 2 pm.
