Harrogate, TN - Two days after falling in its first home game, against the Wingate Bulldogs in a tightly contested battle, the Lincoln Memorial field hockey team was back in action on the road at Barton on Sunday in a program record-tying performance. With the win over Barton, Lincoln Memorial matched the program record for wins in a season, matching its 2024 total with three wins, improving to 3-3 on the season. It is the best start in program history. The Bulldogs are a new addition to the conference for field hockey. Sunday's match up was the first time the two programs have met all-time.
Both offenses struggled to find and maintain any rhythm in the first half. Lincoln Memorial saw more scoring opportunities, out shooting Barton 8-1, with five shots on goal and five corners. However, both goalkeepers and defenses played an exceptional first half, leaving the game knotted at goose eggs at the half, 0-0. Lincoln Memorial increased its offensive tenacity in the third quarter, ripping off four shots, with three on goal, but were still unable to secure the game's first goal, seeing the game spill into the final frame still knotted at 0-0. The Railsplitters opened up in the fourth quarter, taking command of the game with back-to-back goals in just over a minute.
Lainey Hockersmith and
Jimena Loustalot added a pair of goals in the final quarter to propel Lincoln Memorial to a program record-tying third win of the season through six games. Goalkeeper
Cayla Wiggins tallied the first shutout of her collegiate career as well, facing three shots, allowing zero goals.
Lincoln Memorial will take some much-needed rest for a week before taking to the home field turf against the currently ninth-ranked Lander Bearcats on September 30th at 11 AM.
