Women's Soccer Falls To #6 Catawba

Harrogate, TN – Lincoln Memorial falls to the #6 Catawba College Catawba Indians Saturday afternoon 1-3.

The first ten minutes were a battle, as both teams were able to get the ball into their own respective attacking thirds, but the Catawba Indians were able to get three shots off, all three saved by Railsplitter goalkeeper Ari Frey.

Lincoln Memorial's first chance at goal came soon after in the 11th minute off a corner kick, with Donna van der Zalm's header going off frame.

Catawba gained the lead in the 16th minute as Matthews scored off McGuire to make the score 0-1.

After the goal, LMU continued to give Catawba a battle, as they were able to limit the Catawba Indians' offensive opportunities for the next 15 minutes.

Catawba extended their lead in the 31st minute as Setzer scored to make the score 0-2.

With neither team scoring for the remainder of the half, the Railsplitters went into half-time falling 0-2.

The second half started like the first, with possession shifting back-and-forth but the Catawba Indians getting two shots off compared to LMU's none.

Despite Catawba's offensive showing up, Lincoln Memorial's defense also showed up as the backline continued to block shot after shot to prevent the ball having a chance at goal.

The Railsplitters increased the momentum after the 70th minute, as shots from Elizabeth Butler and Lieve Schiphof go on frame, but saved by the Catawba Indian goalkeeper.

In the 77th minute, the Catawba Indians increased their lead to three goals with Rush scoring.

Three minutes later in the 80th minute, the Railsplitters put themselves on the board as Camden Prosser took a corner kick which went right to Donna van der Zalm, who headed the ball in the back of the net to make the score 1-3.

With the remaining 10 minutes of the match quiet, the Catawba Indians get the 1-3 victory.

Van der Zalm had the only goal for the Railsplitters, with Prosser tallying the assist. Van der Zalm, Butler, and Edie Wilds all led the team in shots with two each. Goalkeeper Ari Frey played all 90 minutes in goal and tied her career-high with seven saves.

As a team, Lincoln Memorial took nine shots, with four being on goal, and recorded four corner kicks and seven saves.

With the loss, Lincoln Memorial drops to 4-4-4 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play and Catawba improves to 10-2-1 overall and 7-0-1 in conference play.

The team will have a week off as their next match is on Saturday, October 17th on the road at Coker at 4:30 pm.
