Men's basketball prevails against Northern Michigan

Wisconsin Dells, WI -- The Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team secured a hard-fought victory against Northern Michigan University on Sunday night at the Midwest Tip-Off Classic in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Playing two extremely competitive 20-minute halves, the Railsplitters warded off a late second-half surge to prevail with a final score of 72-69 to cap off a 2-1 weekend in the Midwest Tip-Off Classic.

The first half set a competitive tone. Miles Gurske put Lincoln Memorial on the board first with a quick jump shot, but Northern Michigan responded with perimeter scoring and interior plays to keep the game locked in a tight battle. Amhad Jarrard provided an early spark for the Railsplitters, attacking the paint for multiple layups and converting at the free-throw line. Ryan Nutter knocked down a 3-pointer and added several steals, while Wes Rubin provided extra punch inside with a layup, a perimeter jumper, and two converted free throws. Tyler Lee added two free throws, Jayden Spearman went coast-to-coast for a fastbreak layup, and JC Brooks hit a jumper in the lane to keep pace. Despite Northern Michigan hitting five 3-pointers and executing efficient second-chance layups late in the half, the teams remained knotted in a 37-37 draw heading into the locker room at halftime.

Lincoln Memorial opened the second half with immediate energy as Lee drained a fastbreak 3-pointer. Northern Michigan stayed relentless, using second-chance opportunities and timely perimeter baskets to take a 45 to 44 lead at the 15:20 mark. Spearman tied the game with a free throw and later hit a 3-pointer, while Brooks provided high-efficiency scoring around the rim with a layup and a fastbreak dunk. Lee continued to attack the rim, converting a fastbreak dunk and consecutive interior layups to keep the Railsplitters within striking distance during a back-and-forth stretch that saw Northern Michigan edge ahead 66-64.

The Railsplitters executed when it mattered most over the final four minutes. Lee tied the game at 66 with a layup and added a free throw to regain a 67-66 lead. After Northern Michigan moved back ahead by a single point via free throws, Nutter delivered the defining shot of the night by sinking a go-ahead 3-pointer at the 1:59 mark to put Lincoln Memorial up 70-68. Defensive stops by Brooks and Lee down the stretch thwarted Northern Michigan's final possessions, and Gurske sealed the 72-69 victory by calmly sinking two pressure free throws with mere seconds remaining on the clock.
