Men's basketball's late game push not enough at Wingate

Wingate, NC – The Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team fell short on the road Saturday evening as Wingate defended its home floor with a 79-72 victory inside Cuddy Arena. Although Lincoln Memorial controlled the glass and created numerous second chance opportunities, the Bulldogs used efficient shooting and balanced ball movement to secure the win.

The contest was a battle of contrasting styles as Lincoln Memorial relied on grit and rebounding while Wingate found success through offensive precision. The Railsplitters finished the game shooting 35.7 percent from the field compared to a mark of 50 percent for the Bulldogs. Lincoln Memorial held a significant advantage on the boards, out rebounding Wingate 42 to 33, including 18 offensive rebounds. However, Wingate was able to generate looks throughout the night, recording 22 assists on 28 made baskets.

Lincoln Memorial showed flashes of dominance early in the first half, building a six point lead with nearly seven minutes remaining before the break. The momentum shifted toward the end of the opening period when Wingate took a lead they would never relinquish with just over two minutes left on the clock. In the second half, the Bulldogs extended their advantage to as many as 17 points by capitalizing on interior scoring and transition opportunities.

Individual efforts kept the Railsplitters within striking distance until the final buzzer. Walter Campbell led the charge for Lincoln Memorial by recording a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. He was a force at the free throw line, connecting on all nine of his attempts. Nate Mims followed closely with 22 points and five rebounds. Jayden Spearman also reached double figures by contributing 12 points on four made shots from beyond the arc. Despite the loss, Lincoln Memorial showed depth by receiving 19 points from the bench and recording seven steals.

The Railsplitters will be back on their home court this week for crucial conference match ups with Carson-Newman on Wednesday and Anderson on Saturday.
