Baseball splits doubleheader with Hillsdale

Harrogate, TN – The Lincoln Memorial baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader against Hillsdale College on Feb. 8, as the Railsplitters paired a late-inning surge in the opener with a dominant offensive display in the nightcap.

In game one, Ronny Matti provided the early spark for the Railsplitters, finishing the contest 2-for-4 with an RBI. His first-inning single brought home Peyton Mullannix, who reached base twice and scored a run. Aaron Hobson was a bright spot at the bottom of the lineup, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, including a double in the fourth. Caleb Jordan remained productive at the plate, collecting two RBIs, while Brooks Hagedorn added a pinch-hit single in the seventh. On the mound, Dylan Maire turned in a solid start, allowing only one earned run over four innings of work. Lucas Smith was tagged with the loss after a long relief appearance, while Easton Barnett closed out the ninth. Despite a 9-hit effort from the lineup, the Railsplitters could not overcome a four-run ninth-inning surge by the Chargers, falling 7-3 in the first game of the doubleheader; game two of the series.

Lincoln Memorial found its rhythm in the second game, powered by a disciplined approach that drew 13 walks. Jordan was a central figure once again, reaching base four times with two runs and an RBI. Gabe Gray anchored the middle of the order, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Brady Morse contributed three RBIs on a 1-for-4 performance. Nick Kaelin and Mullannix showed exceptional patience at the plate, combining for five walks and three runs scored. Ford Hallock and CJ Dugan also reached via the walk and scored to help build the lead.

The pitching staff backed up the offensive output in game two, led by Eli Edds, who earned the win by striking out four over three innings. Jack Santi provided four strong innings of relief, scattering six hits and striking out four to keep the opposition at bay. The combined effort ensured a 9-4 victory for the Railsplitters, bringing their record to a split for the day, improving to 2-5 on the season.
