Men's Lacrosse Takes Down The Saints

Crestview Hills, KY– Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse defeat the Thomas More Saints Wednesday evening 22-5.

The Saints got things started as they scored ten seconds into the match, but the Railsplitters quickly responded with a goal from Jenson Jones with 12:43 remaining, assisted by Domenico Moscato. The back-and-forth scoring started with another TMU goal with 11:46 remaining and an LMU goal by Jones (assisted by Alex Wegrzyn) with 9:30 remaining. Lincoln Memorial then picked up momentum with a four-goal scoring run, beginning with Alex Wegrzyn assisting Jones with 9:30 remaining and Grant House assisting Becket O'Shea with 8:54 remaining. The next two goals were in the six-minute mark as House scored a goal of his own with 6:49 remaining, assisted by Cooper Grandaos, and Jones recorded the hat trick with 6:09 remaining, with Gavin Reid earning the assist. The remainder of the quarter was all LMU as Max Leachman added a goal with 4:21 remaining, assisted by Dakota Ayres, Wegrzyn scored with 3:31 remaining, and Shane Psaltis scored off of Jones with 2:18 remaining to give the Railsplitters the 8-2 lead going into the second quarter.

The second was much like the first, as Lincoln Memorial scored quick with 13:54 remaining by Wegrzyn. The Railsplitters stood strong defensively and offensively as they limited Thomas More to score one goal but adding seven goals of their own. In the second, Reid scored three goals, and Koen Burdette, Jones, O'Shea, and Ayres each added one goal, while O'Shea, House, and Jones each tallied an assist in the second. The only goal that the Saints scored in the second was with 32 seconds remaining in the quarter, giving Lincoln Memorial the 16-3 advantage going into halftime.

The Railsplitters didn't allow Thomas More to score any goals in the third, but extended their lead by four goals, beginning with Psaltis scoring off of Jones with 13:36 remaining. Jacob Scholz scored off of a House assist with 10:58 remaining, and Mason Sarver added an unassisted goal with 8:57 remaining. With Jones (assisted by Scholz) scoring the last goal for LMU in the third with 2:49 remaining, the Railsplitters go into the final frame leading 20-3.

The fourth was a low scoring quarter, as each team only tallied two goals, beginning with Jones scoring off of a Psaltis assist with 13:28 remaining. The Saints added their two goals with 11:37 and 2:51 remaining, and LMU's Burdette added the last goal of the match with 12 second remaining, giving Lincoln Memorial the 22-5 victory.

Jones led in points on the day with nine points for six goals and three assists, followed by Reid (3 goals, 1 assist) and House (1 goal, 3 assists) with four points each. Psaltis, O'Shea, and Wegrzyn each scored recorded two goals and one assist for three points and Ayres and Scholz both added one goal and one assist each for two points. Burdette scored two goals, and Leachman and Sarver registered one goal each. Moscato and Grandos rounded out the points for LMU with one assist each for one point.

Reid led in shots on the day with eight, as Jones led in shots on goal with six. Brixten McKenzie was the team leader in ground balls and won face offs with seven and 12, respectively. Mark Alarcon and O'Shea both led in caused turnovers with two each. Goalkeepers Connor Fitzgibbon and Pablo Irizarry both earned time in goal, with Fitzgibbon earned seven saves and Irizarry recorded two saves.

As a team, Lincoln Memorial recorded 45 shots, with 30 being on goal, 33 ground balls, 16 successful clears, 16 won face offs, and six caused turnovers.

With the win, LMU improves to 7-4 overall and Thomas More drops to 4-7 overall.

The team will be on the road again this week as they travel  to Anderson, SC on Saturday, April 4th to face Anderson at 12 pm.
