Wise, VA – Lincoln Memorial women's lacrosse falls to the UVA Wise Cavaliers Wednesday afternoon 7-22.
The Cavs got things started as they put the first goal on the board with 12:19 remaining, but Lincoln Memorial quickly responded with a goal of their own to tie up the match at 1-1, thanks to
Josie Tinnerello assisting off
Ruby Copeland. Copeland then added a goal of their own to get the lead with 9:32 remaining, assisted by
Briana Martinez. The Cavs then added four goals before the two-minute mark, then
Abby Durkin scored for LMU with 2:03 remaining, with Copeland getting another assist on the day. With UVA Wise adding one more goal before the end of the quarter, the Railsplitters go into the second quarter falling 3-7.
Ryan Smith scored first for LMU in the second as she scored quickly with 14:34 remaining, but the rest of the quarter was all Cavaliers as they added eight goals to the scoreboard, making the score 4-15 going into halftime.
The third was much like the second, with Wise started the quarter with a four-goal run, followed by the lone goal of the quarter for Lincoln Memorial by Copeland with 2:52 remaining. The score going into the final frame would be 5-19 with the Railsplitters falling.
Quarter four was the biggest battle between the two teams, as UVA Wise scored first with 12:18 remaining followed by a Railsplitter goal by
Naomi Spangler with 10:31 remaining. The Cavaliers added a pair of goals with 8:23 remaining and 1:35 remaining, but Lincoln Memorial had the last say as
Jaiden Jaynes scored with 0:24 seconds left with
Hailey Rizzo earning the assist. Despite the last minute attempt by LMU, they fall to the UVA Wise Cavaliers 7-22.
Copeland led on the afternoon with four points for two goals and two assists. Spangler, Durkin, Jaynes, Smith, and Tinnerello each recorded one goal and Martinez and Rizzo added an assist each.
Smith was the team-leader in ground balls with two and Spangler, Smith, and
Mary Kostus each registered a caused turnover. Goalkeepers
Jovie Favati and Emily Mirable each earned time in goal, with Favati recording two saves and Mirabile tallying four.
As a team, Lincoln Memorial recorded 15 shots, with ten being on goal, six successful clears, seven ground balls, and 16 draw controls.
With the loss, LMU drops to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play and UVA Wise improves to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the SAC.
The team will be on the road again this week as they travel to Anderson, SC on Saturday, April 4
th to face Anderson at 3 pm.
