Men's Lacrosse Drops Match To Wingate

Wingate, NC - Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse falls to the Wingate Bulldogs Saturday afternoon 6-21.

Wingate got things started in the first as they started the match with a three-goal run within the first five minutes. The next nine minutes were quiet until the Railsplitters scored their first goal of the match with 1:49 remaining with Alex Wegrzyn scoring off of Domenico Moscato. With the Bulldogs adding a goal with one second left, LMU goes into the second quarter falling 1-4.

The Bulldogs scored one less goal in the second, as Wingate scored one goal less than a minute into the quarter and their second ten minutes later. A minute later with 3:25 remaining, LMU's Koen Burdette added another goal for Lincoln Memorial, assisted by Beckett O'Shea. Wingate scored another goal before the end of the quarter, making the score 2-7 going into halftime with the Bulldogs in the lead.

Lincoln Memorial increased the momentum in the third, as they scored first with 13:27 remaining, with Gavin Reid scoring off of Jenson Jones. After three Wingate goals over the next six minutes, Reid added to his tally with back-to-back unassisted goals with 7:27 and 5:16 remaining, making the score 5-10. With the Bulldogs recording two more goals by the end of the quarter, the Railsplitters go into the final frame behind 5-12.

Wingate did nothing but solidify their position in the fourth, as they added eight goals before Lincoln Memorial recorded their last goal of the match by Reid (assisted by Wegrzyn) with 0:24 remaining. As Wingate scored a last second goal in the fourth, the Bulldogs get the 6-21 victory.

Reid led in points with four as he recorded four goals. Wegrzyn followed with two points for a goal and an assist. Burdette finished with one point for one goal and O'Shea, Moscato, and Jones each tallied an assist.

Reid led in shots and shots on goal with 16 and 10, respectively. Mark Alarcon and Wegrzyn both led in ground balls with four each, and Brixten McKenzie won team-high eight face offs. Goalkeeper Connor Fitsgibbon recorded 14 saves.

As a team, Lincoln Memorial took 38 shots, with 19 being on goal, 33 ground balls, 14 saves, 23 successful clears, and nine won face offs.

With the loss, Lincoln Memorial drops to 7-7 overall and 2-6 in conference play, and Wingate improves to 11-3 overall and 8-0 in the SAC.

The team's next match is on the road as they travel to Mars Hill, SC to face Mars Hill on Wednesday, April 22nd at 1 pm.
