HARROGATE, Tennessee – The Railsplitters are growing again. Lincoln Memorial University will add women's flag football to its intercollegiate athletics program, with the new team set to begin competition in spring 2028. The addition expands opportunities for student-athletes at LMU and brings the University into a sport experiencing significant growth at the collegiate level.
Women's flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country and continues to gain momentum in collegiate athletics. Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. LMU's inaugural season will arrive at an important moment in the sport's growth, giving the University's first flag football student-athletes an opportunity to help establish a program from the ground up.
"We are excited to bring women's flag football to Lincoln Memorial University," said Travis Muncy, LMU athletics director. "Adding this program creates another opportunity for student-athletes to compete, grow and represent the Railsplitters. We are excited to be part of the momentum behind this sport and look forward to building a program that will become an important part of LMU Athletics."
The addition of women's flag football continues the University's growth in intercollegiate athletics and reflects LMU's commitment to creating opportunities for student-athletes to pursue excellence in competition, in the classroom and beyond.
The NCAA added women's flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program in 2026, providing a pathway for the sport's continued development within collegiate athletics.
LMU will begin a national search for its inaugural women's flag football head coach. The program's conference affiliation, schedule and additional details will be announced at a later date.
