Harrogate, TN -- The Lincoln Memorial women's volleyball team fell at home on Tuesday evening, dropping a hard-fought five-set battle to the visiting Mars Hill Lions.
The Railsplitters opened the match strong behind the physical play of
Kaytlin Johnson and
Jazmine Starks at the net. Early service aces from
Georgia Dobson and
Lauren Pickett helped Lincoln Memorial build momentum, while key blocks by
Aaliyah Rodgers,
Laney Inman, and
Sarah Robbins kept the visiting attack in check. Despite a late push from the Lions,
Finley Sparks closed out the opening frame with an authoritative kill off a set from Jacob, securing a 25 to 22 victory for the home team to give the Railsplitters a one-set lead.
Mars Hill responded sharply in the second set to even the match. Lincoln Memorial jumped out to an early advantage following a service ace by Johnson and active net play from Dobson and Inman. However, errors began to plague the Railsplitters midway through the game, allowing the visitors to orchestrate a late six-point scoring run. Sparks provided occasional relief on offense, and Megan Maier entered to serve late in the set, but Mars Hill capitalized on attack errors to claim a 25 to 19 win, evening the match at one set apiece.
Lincoln Memorial regained control in the third set through aggressive serving and dominant transition play. Jana Petkovic set the tone early with an ace, while Pickett distributed the offense effectively to find Starks, Inman, and Johnson for quick points. Dobson added multiple kills down the stretch, and a late defensive block by Robbins sparked a closing five-point surge for the Railsplitters, capped off by back-to-back kills from Rodgers to secure the 25 to 18 set victory and a two-to-one set lead in the match.
The fourth set delivered a back-and-forth exchange that ultimately swung the match's momentum. Lincoln Memorial built a commanding 24 to 16 match-point lead behind service aces from Dobson, Pickett, Johnson, and Petkovic, alongside heavy hitting from Inman and Sparks. However, the Lions mounted a furious run to erase the deficit and tie the frame at 24. After a quick exchange of points, Mars Hill scored three consecutive balls to complete the miraculous 27 to 25 comeback and force a deciding fifth set.
The final frame was a back-and-forth battle early on, with neither team leading by more than a point through the first 14 rallies. Kills from Sparks, Starks, and Johnson kept Lincoln Memorial in step. Trailing 11 to 10, the Railsplitters found a point from Rodgers off a Petkovic assist to narrow the gap. However, Mars Hill sealed the 15 to 11 set win to complete the dramatic match comeback on the road.
