CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Lady Railsplitters (7-2-1, 5-1-1 SAC) and Queens Royals (5-6-2, 3-2-2 SAC) played to a 0-0 draw in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday evening in Charlotte, N.C. after a passing thunderstorm delayed the 5 p.m. kickoff by nearly an hour.
With the tie, Lincoln Memorial remains unbeaten in its last seven appearances. The Lady Railsplitters were, however, denied the opportunity to win six straight conference matches for the first time in program history, moving to 1-0-1 against the Royals in the second all-time meeting between the two units.
Despite coming up empty on offense, the Lady Railsplitters racked up an 18-10 shot advantage, firing seven shots in the opening frame to only two for the home standing Royals. Lincoln Memorial landed two shots on target in the opening half as senior
Nicole McKinney (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and sophomore
Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario) found their mark, but both of those attempts were turned away by Queens goalkeeper Emily Mager.
In the second stanza, the Lady Railsplitters sprayed nine shots while Queens tallied eight shots, forcing junior netminder
Kayla Stephens (Keller, Texas) to turn away two shot attempts. Kate Brenna Grass was responsible for both of those on-target tries as she managed to hoist up four shots during the final 45 minutes of regulation.
The two teams would only combine for five shots on goal as LMU claimed a slight 3-2 edge, notching two attempts in the first half with only one in the second and the two 10-minute overtime periods. Lincoln Memorial accounted for the final shot on goal in the match-up in the second overtime period as Hunter headed a pass off a corner kick by teammate
Fernanda Miaci (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) into the awaiting hands of Mager.
Seven different Lady Railsplitters accounted for shots during the match as both Hunter and Miaci paced LMU with four shots apiece, while
Kadie Soall (Tecumseh, Ontario) and McKinney each accounted for three attempts of their own.
Stephens posted her fourth shutout of the 2014 season as she held the Royals scoreless for 110 minutes of action while adding two saves. Her opposition, Emily Mager, was equally impressive as she tallied three saves over that same span.
The Lady Railsplitters will take a brief break from South Atlantic Conference action as they host USC-Aiken at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14 at the LMU Soccer Complex.
