Lady Railsplitters clash with Bears and Tornados at Mary Mars Gym

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Carrying a four-match winning streak, the Lady Railsplitters (14-9, 10-5 SAC) return to Mary Mars Gymnasium for a South Atlantic Conference weekend series against Lenoir-Rhyne (15-7, 9-6 SAC) and Brevard (10-12, 4-11 SAC). Lincoln Memorial looks for retribution versus the Bears at 7 p.m. on Friday before vying for the regular-season sweep of the Tornados at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Lady Railsplitters captured their fourth consecutive victory on Tuesday, outlasting the Mars Lions in five sets in Mars Hill, N.C. It was the Lady Railsplitters' second straight five-set match and seventh of the 2014 campaign. Lincoln Memorial hit .216 as a whole with four different players accounting for eight or more kills. Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) posted 15 terminations, while senior Allison Beavers (Tomball, Texas) put down a season-high 13 kills. MaRanda Boddie (Springfield, Ohio) and Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) added nine and eight kills, respectively. Mars Hill committed 38 hitting errors, the fourth LMU opponent to commit at least 30 errors in a match.

Friday evening's match offers the Lady Railsplitters a two-way shot at redemption against Lenoir-Rhyne. Back on September 26, the Bears handed the Lady Railsplitters one of their worst losses of the season, knocking off Lincoln Memorial in three sets while compiling a .356 attack percentage. The Lady Railsplitters, meanwhile, mustered only 29 kills with 13 errors for a .151 attacking clip. The loss was the Lady Railsplitters' third straight to the Bears, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit for a five-set win in Harrogate last season.

The Bears arrive in Harrogate following a five-set win over the Newberry Wolves, but prior to that the visitors from Hickory, N.C. were throttled by eighth-ranked Wingate in straight sets. The Bears are 6-4 in their last 10 appearances on the court, positioning themselves only a game back of the Lady Railsplitters in a two-way tie for fifth place in the SAC standings. Lenoir-Rhyne has produced an average of 12.36 kills per set while attacking at a .192 rate, both of which rank fourth in the league. The Bears make a lot happen, good and bad, at the net as they lead the SAC in solo blocks (48) and block errors (53). Lenoir-Rhyne's 2.02 blocks per set are the third-most in the league this season.

Sophomore middle blocker Brooke Redmond (2.94), senior outside hitter Haley Rhyne (2.48) and junior pin player Ashley Wells (2.35) lead Lenoir-Rhyne in kills per set as that trio has accounted for 587 of the team's 1,001 kills. Sophomore Brandi Thomas has factored in 1.83 kills per set and 121 total kills. Junior setter Brianna Gottberg is ranked third in the SAC with 9.73 assists per set to go alongside 2.68 digs per frame. Junior Morgan Bunker is pacing the Bears with 4.09 digs per set.

A much different opponent greets the Lady Railsplitters on Saturday afternoon as Lincoln Memorial strives for its 19th consecutive win over Brevard. The Lady Railsplitters bested the Tornados in three sets on September 27 in Brevard, N.C., topping Brevard for the 10th time in 3-0 fashion to improve to 19-0 all-time in the series. The Lady Railsplitters hit .237 as a unit in the first match-up this season, limiting the Tornados to a .135 clip with only 37 kills.

After starting the season 8-3 with league victories over Coker and Newberry, the Tornados have plummeted to a 2-9 mark over their last 11 appearances. Included in that, Brevard dropped a straight-set decision to Coker, becoming the first team to fall victim to the Cobras since they joined the league prior to the 2013 campaign. The Tornados head into the weekend riding a four-match losing streak. Brevard is hitting .176 as a team this season while producing 11.68 kills per set, ranked seventh among SAC programs. The Tornados have hit .200 or better only once (a 3-0 win over Queens) in their last 12 matches.

Freshmen Rachel Ruble (2.59) and Hannah Elmore (2.28), along with junior Fatima Gharachorloo (2.22), are leading Brevard in kills per set. Freshman setter Erin Barr is contributing 8.62 assists and 2.60 digs per set, while sophomore libero Aleksandra Vrvilo is ranked third in the SAC with 5.36 scoops per set.

The Lady Railsplitters are aiming to win five straight matches for the second time this season, boasting an offense that has produced 11.82 kills per set with a cumulative .190 attack percentage. While featuring a steadily surging attack that has surpassed the .200 hitting mark in five of their last six matches, the Lady Railsplitters have held each of their opponents below .170 hitting over this four-match flourish. Five different Lady Railsplitters are contributing at least 1.50 kills per set, a group includes Holland, Fleeman, Beavers, Boddie and Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.).

The Lady Railsplitters welcome Lenoir-Rhyne to Mary Mars Gym at 7 p.m. on Friday before closing out the weekend on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Brevard. Live stats and a free broadcast, compliments of the LMU Sports Network, will be available for both of those matches.
