No.23 Railsplitters battle Trojans in SAC action Tuesday

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- In a rematch of last season's South Atlantic Conference Championship title game, the 23rd-ranked Railsplitters (4-0, 2-0 SAC) travel to Anderson, S.C. on Tuesday, November 22 to square off against the Anderson Trojans (1-3, 0-1 SAC). Tip-off in that league clash is set for 8 p.m. at Anderson's Abney Athletic Center.

The LMU-Anderson series has been chock-full of drama since the initial meeting between the two squads during the 2010-11 campaign, Anderson's first as full-time members of the SAC. The Railsplitters have only lost 18 games combined since the start of that season, but the Trojans are responsible for exactly one-third of those losses (6). Eight of the 10 all-time meetings between the two teams have been decided by 10 points or fewer, while only a single possession has separated the two squads in three head-to-head meetings. Last season, Anderson handed the Railsplitters a devastating 84-79 overtime loss in Tex Turner Arena, but Lincoln Memorial bounced back with a 77-74 win at Anderson and a 76-71 victory in the title game of the SAC Championship.

Anderson has struggled early this season to compensate for the loss of seniors Chandler Hash and CJ Gleaton, who combined to score nearly 41 points per game during the 2013-14 campaign. The absence of senior center Chris Ross, who averaged 9.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest last season, has also weighed heavy on the Trojans' rotation as he has yet to appear in a game this season due to an apparent injury. After falling to GRU Augusta and Clayton State in the season-opening weekend, Anderson picked up its first win early last week with a narrow 83-82 triumph over Young Harris.

However, the Trojans opened SAC play by suffering a 71-68 setback to Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday. Anderson fell victim to a hot-shooting Bears' attack that went 20-for-41 from the field and 10-for-22 from three-point range. The Trojans went 11-for-23 from three-point range (47.8 percent), but they were just 9-for-26 inside of the arc.

The senior backcourt trio of Myson Jones, Nick Jackson and Alani Adekambi lead Anderson as that group is accounting for 38.7 of the team's 71.2 points per game. Jones paces that three-headed attack with 16.5 points and 3.8 assists per game, while Jackson is pitching in 12.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per appearance. Jackson is shooting 58.6 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from three. Adekambi is adding 10 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Three-pointers have comprised nearly half of Anderson's total offensive production as 43 of their 91 field goals have come from beyond the three-point arc. That output has masked poor showings both defensively and on the glass, as the Trojans are near the bottom of the SAC in total rebounds per game (32), points per game allowed (76.5) and opponents' field goal percentage (46 percent).

The Railsplitters are vying for their fourth 5-0 start in the last five seasons. Lincoln Memorial solidified itself as one of the three remaining unbeatens in the South Atlantic Conference, along with Newberry and Wingate, with a 66-51 win over the Queens Royals in Charlotte, N.C. this past weekend. The Railsplitters turned a four-point lead at the 5:34 mark into a 15-point victory with a 15-4 closing run, as they put in their stingiest defensive effort of the season by limiting the Royals to just 32.7 percent shooting and a 1-for-15 mark from long range.

Backcourt mates Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) and Lorenza Ross (Savannah, Ga.) lead the Railsplitters into Tuesday's contest. Choice is pouring in 19.5 points per contest while shooting the rock at a scalding hot 61.3 percent mark from beyond the three-point arc (19-for-31). Ross, meanwhile, is pitching in 16.2 points and 4.0 assists per on 65 percent shooting. Juniors Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Tim Pierce (Albany, Ga.) are backing that duo with 10.2 and 9.2 points per game, respectively.

The Railsplitters have held each of their first four opponents below 42 percent shooting from the field, while none of those teams have surpassed 36 percent shooting from three-point range. Lincoln Memorial has outscored its opponents by a combined 168-127 margin in the second half this season. The Railsplitters lead the South Atlantic Conference in overall field goal percentage (51.7 percent) as well as opponents' field goal percentage (37.5 percent).
