HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (16-12, 12-8 SAC) wrap up the regular season schedule at Mary Mars Gymnasium this weekend, welcoming Newberry (14-14, 8-12 SAC) and Anderson (22-6, 15-5 SAC) to Harrogate, Tenn. for a South Atlantic Conference volleyball doubleheader. Lincoln Memorial tangles with the Wolves at 7 p.m. Friday evening before celebrating Senior Day and hosting the Trojans at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters are looking to sweep the season series against Newberry for the first time since 2011 after outlasting the Wolves in five sets back on October 10. Newberry shot itself in the foot in that match, committing 38 attacking miscues - the most by an LMU opponent in a single match this season - to offset a 63 kill performance. The Lady Railsplitters collected a season-high 18 block assists while producing 58 kills on a .212 attack percentage.
Â
Inversely, Anderson aims to sweep season series over the Lady Railsplitters for the first time in program history as Lincoln Memorial enters the match holding an 11-3 advantage all-time. The Trojans rallied from a two sets to one deficit in Anderson, S.C. on October 11, in spite of an LMU offensive attack that amassed 63 kills and hit .245 as a unit. The duo of Shannon Gillespie and Hailey Pittman ultimately proved too much as that pair combined for 40 kills.
Â
Since the initial meeting with the Lady Railsplitters, the Newberry Wolves have compiled an even 5-5 mark, but four of those five losses were in five sets to teams among the top half of the SAC standings (Wingate, Carson-Newman, Anderson, Lenoir-Rhyne). The Wolves' offensive numbers aren't eye-popping as they have accounted for 11.77 kills per set on a .170 attack percentage, ranking seventh and eighth in the league, respectively, in those categories. Those figures have been elevated in recent encounters as the Wolves have topped the .200 attacking clip in three of their last four matches. Newberry's 112 ball-handling errors lead the SAC, but they also lead the league in block assists (353) and total blocks (230). Â
Â
Sophomore outside hitter Logan Hayward and senior right side Amanda Soper pace the Wolves offensively as Hayward has amassed 2.39 kills per set to pair alongside Soper's 2.23 per. Senior middle blocker is the Wolves' most efficient attacker as she is hitting .283 this season while averaging 1.95 kills and 1.05 blocks per set. Senior libero Elayni Stokes is pulling the weight defensively with 5.12 digs per set. Newberry features three different players averaging better than four assists per set, but junior Rachel Moran leads that trio with 6.03 assists per set.
Â
The Anderson Trojans have compiled an 8-1 mark since rallying for that five-set victory over the Lady Railsplitters, with their only loss over that span being a straight-set setback to then No.7 nationally ranked Wingate. The Trojans enter the weekend with a one-game cushion over Lenoir-Rhyne for third place in the SAC while holding down the No.7 seed in the most recent NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings. Anderson has attacked at a .225 rate and produced an average of 12.5 kills per set, ranking third in the league in both of those categories. The Trojans have committed the second-fewest attacking errors in the SAC this season with only 430 on nearly 3,700 total attempts. Like Newberry, the visitors from Anderson, S.C. are a formidable force at the net with 320 block assists and 209 total blocks.
Â
Anderson's senior middle blocker Hailey Pittman leads the entire South Atlantic Conference in kills per set (3.62), total kills (358) and attack percentage (.410) as she has produced double-digit kills in 17 of her 28 appearances. Not to be outdone, classmate Shannon Gillespie is sixth in the SAC with 308 total kills and 3.08 per set. Gillespie has also accounted for 2.97 digs per frame. Freshman Kendall Vallancourt backs that duo with 1.82 kills per set. Sophomore Priscilla Irizarry paces the Trojans with 7.91 assists per set while factoring in 2.65 digs per. Senior Alix Hooker is putting up a team-leading 5.36 scoops per frame.
Â
Prior to Saturday's afternoon bout with the Trojans, the Lady Railsplitters will celebrate Senior Day with a ceremony to honor the careers of
Allison Beavers (Tomball, Texas),
Monica McConnaughey (Federal Way, Wash.) and
MaRanda Boddie (Springfield, Ohio).Â
Â
The Lady Railsplitters enter the final weekend of the regular season assured at worst a sixth-place SAC showing. Lincoln Memorial is looking to bounce back from a disheartening straight-set loss to arch-rival Carson-Newman on Tuesday in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Lady Railsplitters were limited to a .140 attack percentage with 33 kills and 16 errors as the Eagles swept the season series for the first time since 2008.
Â
Freshman
Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) leads the Lady Railsplitters with 3.00 kills per set and 321 total kills as she has collected double-digit kills in 18 of her 28 appearances. Sophomore
Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) enters the weekend averaging 2.41 kills per set with 243 total kills, but she has failed to reach double figures in any of the last six matches. Beavers has picked up the slack in recent weeks as she has produced nine or more kills in five of her last seven outings. She is averaging 1.84 kills per set on a .185 attack percentage. Sophomore setter
Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) is contributing 8.89 assists and 2.67 digs per set, while junior libero
Casey Mense (Littleton, Colo.) is ranked fifth in the conference with 4.61 digs per set.
