Errors derail Lady Railsplitters in 3-1 loss to Newberry

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- A mistake-prone offensive attack proved detrimental for the Lady Railsplitters on Friday evening at Mary Mars Gymnasium as they dropped a 3-1 decision (20-25, 19-25, 25-17, 16-25) to the Newberry Wolves in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action.

Lincoln Memorial limited the visiting Wolves to a mere .155 hitting percentage while forcing 26 attacking miscues and accounting for a season-high 20 block assist. But, that defensive performance was undone by a tepid offensive effort. The Lady Railsplitters finished the match with a .103 attack percentage as they compiled 39 kills and 23 errors on 156 total attempts. LMU collected seven service aces which were offset by 10 reception errors.

Freshman outside hitter Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) led the Lady Railsplitters with 10 kills, but she also led the squad with seven attack errors. Holland did, however, figure in 10 digs and five blocks assists. Sophomore right side Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) posted eight kills and four digs, while senior Allison Beavers (Tomball, Texas) did a little bit of everything with five kills, nine assists and six digs. Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.) and Kara Solek (Denver, N.C.) pitched in four kills apiece. Sophomore setter Bristol Snider (Chattanooga, Tenn.) posted a double-double with 19 assists and 17 digs, while junior Casey Mense (Littleton, Colo.) churned out a team-high 18 digs. Graduate student MaRanda Boddie (Springfield, Ohio) notched a match-high six block assists.

The Lady Railsplitters assumed a 7-4 lead in set one following a Newberry attack error, but the Wolves responded with a 12-3 run, keyed by four Amanda Soper kills, to take a 16-10 lead. After two LMU points, Newberry extended its advantage to 20-12 with four unanswered points. Four Newberry attack errors and two kills by Holland paced an 8-3 LMU run, but back-to-back attacking miscues derailed the Lady Railsplitters in a 25-20 loss. The Lady Railsplitters hit .000 in the set with eight kills and eight errors, as they were unable to capitalize on a -.026 effort by the Wolves.

A kill by Solek knotted the second set at 9-9, but the Wolves used a 7-1 run to take command at 16-10. Later in the set, a kill by Logan Hayward and an LMU attack error extended the Newberry cushion to 21-14. The Lady Railsplitters were unable to close the gap to less than five down the stretch as the Wolves finished off the 25-19 victory with a Holly Brisson kill.

Things looked bleak for the Lady Railsplitters in set three as Newberry used an early 9-0 flurry to take a 12-4 lead. Lauren Prachar paced that stretch for the Wolves with three kills. Newberry held sway at 14-7 at the midway point, but the Lady Railsplitters closed the frame with an electric 18-3 run, headlined by a 7-0 flourish to conclude the set. The Wolves committed eight attacking miscues over that stretch as they finished the set hitting .000. The Lady Railsplitters, meanwhile, hit .241 with 11 kills and only four errors.

The Lady Railsplitters trailed 8-7 in set four following a Fleeman kill, but the Wolves followed that with a 7-1 rally to take a 15-8 lead. Another Fleeman kill helped LMU cut the deficit to 17-13, which is the closest they would get down the stretch run. Newberry claimed a 25-16 victory with a kill by Prachar.

Lauren Prachar and Amanda Soper carried the Newberry attack with 12 kills apiece, while Prachar chipped in 17 digs. Jessica King compiled nine kills and Logan Hayward added eight while leading all players with 23 digs. Ashley Minor and Rachel Moran combined for 45 assists, with Minor leading that duo with 25.  Newberry libero Elayni Stokes contributed 21 digs in that match.

The Lady Railsplitters fell to Newberry at home for the third consecutive season as they dropped a 3-1 decision in 2012 to precede a five-set loss at Mary Mars Gym in 2013.

Lincoln Memorial wraps up the regular season schedule on Saturday, hosting the Anderson Trojans for a South Atlantic Conference clash at Mary Mars Gym. Before first serve at 2 p.m., the Lady Railsplitters will celebrate Senior Day with a ceremony to honor the team's three-player senior class: Allison Beavers, MaRanda Boddie and Monica McConnaughey (Federal Way, Wash.).
