No.8 Railsplitters blow out VU-Lynchburg 109-38

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The eighth-ranked Railsplitters (9-0) poured in the ninth-most points in the program's single-game history in a 109-38 thrashing of the Virginia University of Lynchburg Dragons (1-11) in nonconference men's basketball action on Wednesday at Tex Turner Arena. With the win, Lincoln Memorial extended its streak of consecutive nonconference home victories to 33.

Six different players reached double figures for the Railsplitters, a group led by Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.), who broke out of his short shooting slump by going 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc to collect a game high 17 points. Keenan Peterson (College Park, Ga.) fell just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Tim Pierce (Albany, Ga.) returned from injury and promptly put up 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Lorenza Ross (Savannah, Ga.) and Curtis Webb (Spartanburg, S.C.) added 11 points apiece, with Webb going a perfect 3-for-3 from long range. Emanuel Terry (Birmingham, Ala.) turned in his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Railsplitters went 42-for-77 from the field (54.5 percent) and 10-for-24 from three-point territory (41.7 percent). Lincoln Memorial completely dominated nearly every facet of the game, outrebounding the Dragons 60-20, scoring a 35-2 advantage on points off turnovers, and outproducing the visiting unit 60-8 inside of the paint. The Railsplitters' second unit outscored VU-Lynchburg's bench 54-11.

The Railsplitters scored the first six points of the game, including an emphatic drive and dunk by Lorenza Ross, which was a prelude to the home team eventually assuming a 16-4 advantage by the 13:45 mark. Back-to-back jumpers from Traxonte Sawyers cut VU-Lynchburg's deficit to 19-8 at 12:39, but the Railsplitters ripped off a 14-0 run over the next 4:08, forcing the Dragons into five turnovers over that span to take a commanding 33-8 lead. A Choice trifecta and two straight buckets from Peterson bulged LMU's cushion to 42-11 with just 3:53 left in the half. Two Jaquan Sterling free throws and a Hakeem Anthony jumper represented a small flurry for the Dragons, but the Railsplitters closed the half on a 6-0 run, punctuated by Emanuel Terry's offensive rebound and slam, to carry a 51-18 lead into the break.

Devon McCoy buried a trey to open the second half, but the Railsplitters engineered an 11-0 run over the next 2:15 to build a commanding 62-41 lead. Lincoln Memorial would remain in complete control for the remainder of the contest, assuming a 51 point advantage on a Pierce trifecta at the 10:05 mark. That cushion increased to 60 at 92-32 on a Devin Hankins (Huntsville, Ala.) free throw at 7:13. VU-Lynchburg scored only 10 points in the final 14 minutes of regulation.

The Railsplitters smothered the Dragons defensively, limiting the visiting unit to just 24 percent shooting (12-for-50). Devon McCoy paced VU-Lynchburg with nine points, while Jaquan Sterling contributed eight points. Nobody else finished with more than five points in the game for the Dragons.

The Railsplitters complete their five game homestand on Monday, December 15 in a nationally-ranked showdown against No. 21 Newberry. Tip-off between the Railsplitters and Wolves in that South Atlantic Conference contest is scheduled for 8 p.m. inside of Tex Turner Arena.
