Hunter strikes again as Lady Railsplitters capture 1-0 win over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Sophomore Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario) struck again as the Lady Railsplitters (3-2, 1-1 SAC) knocked off the Newberry Wolves (3-1-1, 1-1 SAC) 1-0 Saturday at the Smith Road Complex in Newberry, South Carolina for their first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season.

Lincoln Memorial connected on the lone goal of the contest in the 25th minute when Hunter drove home her fourth goal of the season, beating Newberry netminder Alexis Carrillo in a one-on-one situation set up by a stellar pass from teammate Kadie Soall (Tecumseh, Ontario).

Hunter's goal marked the second-consecutive game in which the Tecumseh, Ontario native has found the back of the net, as the sophomore scored two goals against Georgetown College Wednesday, stretching her career total to 12.

Despite being outshot 19-4 in the contest, Lincoln Memorial managed to muster up three shots on goal including Hunter's game-winning strike.

Junior goaltender Kayla Stephens (Keller, Texas) held the Wolves in check on the afternoon as she accounted for five saves in all 90 minutes of action, posting the team's second shutout of the season. Stephens has yet to allow a goal in her last four appearances in net since allowing two goals to then No.2 nationally ranked West Florida in the first game of the season.

Three different players accumulated shots for the Lady Railsplitters with senior Nicole McKinney (Ooltewah, Tenn.) leading the way with two shots, one of which was turned away by Carrillo, who accounted for two saves of her own. In addition to Hunter and McKinney, senior Fernanda Miaci (Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil) furnished a shot of her own that was also deflected by Carrillo.

The Wolves tallied 19 shots on the afternoon with five shots on goal in the contest.  Guadalupe Magana paced Newberry with four shots with one on goal, while teammates Gabrielle Brodie and Sarah Sager accounted for three shots apiece with Brodie recording two on goal.

The win marks the second-consecutive win over Newberry as LMU defeated the Wolves 2-1 last season at the LMU Soccer Complex. The Lady Railsplitters improve to 6-5-1 against Newberry in the two programs' 12 head-to-head affairs.

The match featured one penalty as Newberry's Rachel Jonas collected a yellow card in the 83rd minute.

The Lady Railsplitters return to action Wednesday, September 24, as they travel to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on the Mars Hill Lions with first kick set for 7:30 from Belk Field.
