Railsplitters aim to bounce back against Lees-McRae Wednesday

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (4-2-1) take a brief break from South Atlantic Conference play with their sights set on returning to form Wednesday, hosting the Lees-McRae Bobcats (5-2-1) at the LMU Soccer Complex in NCAA Division II soccer action at 3 p.m.

Lincoln Memorial will be looking to avoid the program's first three-match losing streak since the start of the 2003 season as the Railsplitters suffered back-to-back 2-1 losses in league play last week. LMU fell to both Mars Hill and Lenoir-Rhyne despite combining for a 47-29 shot advantage in those two contests. After opening the season with four-consecutive wins, the Railsplitters are 0-2-1 in their last three appearances on the pitch.

The Railsplitters must capitalize on the opportunities that present themselves in order to end their current two-match skid. Lincoln Memorial fired off 13 shots on goal in last Wednesday's loss to Mars Hill, the most shots on frame for the program since 2008, with only one goal to show for that effort. The Railsplitters accounted for six second-half shots on goal Saturday but broke through for just the one score.

Entering Wednesday's nonconference bout, the Railsplitters lead the SAC in total shots [130] and shots per game [18.6] but rank among the middle of the pack with 43 total shots on goal and 12 goals scored.

The Railsplitters continue to be led by junior striker Leonardo da Silva (Itajuba, Brazil), who has accumulated five goals, 19 shots and nine shots on goal. After his scorching start with four goals through the first three games of the season, da Silva has posted only one with one total shot on goal over his last four appearances. Junior Pedro Villa (New Braunfels, Texas) increased his goal total to three on Saturday with the equalizer against Lenoir-Rhyne.

Lees-McRae arrives at the LMU Soccer Complex boasting a high-flying offensive attack that has accounted for 17 goals in eight matches, the 28th-highest total among Division II programs. The Bobcats have connected for two or more goals in six of their eight games including a stretch of four-straight matches with three goals from September 13-24. Most recently, the Bobcats suffered their second loss of the season, a 3-2 heartbreaker to Pfeiffer Saturday.

James Galvani and James Smith are leading the Bobcat attack as that duo has combined for 27 points in eight matches. Galvani has converted a team-leading 40 shots and 17 shots on goal into six goals, while Smith has accounted for four goals and five assists with 11 shots on goal. Along with Galvani and Smith, six different Bobcats have amassed 10 or more shots this season.

The Railsplitters will see freshman keeper Tyler Pavlet in goal for the Bobcats as the Goodyear, Ariz. native has allowed nine goals with 22 saves in 750 minutes between the posts.

Lincoln Memorial has not defeated Lees-McRae in nearly 20 years as the two teams have met only six times since the 1990 campaign. The Bobcats captured a 3-2 win in Banner Elk, N.C. in late October last season, while the two teams finished in a 1-1 stalemate in the most recent meeting at the LMU Soccer Complex (10/5/10). LMU last defeated the Bobcats on September 2, 1995, a 4-0 win in Harrogate.

The Railsplitters and Bobcats are scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. at the LMU Soccer Complex. The LMU Sports Network will be providing a live broadcast of that event with pre-game coverage beginning at 2:50.
