HARROGATE, Tenn. -- One of the South Atlantic Conference's most surprising teams invades Tex Turner Arena on Wednesday evening as the No. 2/2 Railsplitters (18-0, 12-0 SAC) put their 18-game winning streak and 24-game home winning streak on the line against the Brevard Tornados (8-10, 6-6 SAC). Tip-off in that contest is slated for 8 p.m. in Harrogate, Tenn.
Â
Brevard hasn't finished above .500 in league play since the 2010-11 campaign, falling to the bottom two of the final SAC standings in each of the past three seasons, but the Tornados have already surpassed their conference win total from any one season over that span. Thanks to an impressive three-game winning streak, the second-longest current flurry in the league, the Tornados are sitting in a three-way tie for fifth in the SAC with an even 6-6 mark. Brevard has won five of its last six games with a perfect 3-0 record on the road.
Â
The Tornados followed up a dramatic win over Newberry and a road win at Anderson by grinding out a 76-73 victory against the Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday. As they seem to continually do, Brevard found a way to win, overcoming some cold shooting (39.1 percent) and an off night from leading scorer Darius Moose. Instead, the Tornados rode Trevon Shaw to victory as he poured in 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting.
Â
Moose and Shaw have carried the torch for the Tornados all season. Moose ranks third in the South Atlantic Conference with 17.6 points per game, which he pairs with 4.9 rebounds and two assists per contest. Shaw, meanwhile, is accounting for 16.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals per appearance. Both Moose and Shaw are shooting the rock at a 47 percent clip this season. Phil Wallace is also averaging double figures for the Tornados with 10.4 points per game. Miles Leathers leads the team in rebounding with 5.7 boards and 8.4 points per game.
Â
Brevard averages 68.8 points per game on 43.6 percent shooting, while opponents are scoring 77.9 points per on 48.4 percent shooting. The Tornados are ranked last in the SAC and 279th out of 294 NCAA Division II teams in field-goal percentage defense, which might prove troublesome against an LMU squad that is fourth in the nation in field-goal percentage with a 52 percent clip. The Railsplitters should also have a distinct advantage on the glass as they rank third in the nation with a plus-12.1 rebounding margin. Brevard is last in that category in the SAC and 276th in the nation with a minus-5.9 clip.
Â
Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) and
Lorenza Ross (Savannah, Ga.) powered the Railsplitters through a sluggish start in an 86-76 win over the Catawba Indians on Saturday at Tex Turner Arena. Lincoln Memorial scored just 33 first-half points on 41.2 percent shooting, but exploded for 53 points in the second half on a 64 percent clip. The Railsplitters extended the nation's longest winning streak to 18 and used some late free throws to claim their 10th consecutive victory by double digits. Choice scored 15 points in the second half and finished the game with a team-leading 20 points, while Ross posted 19 points, nine assists and five rebounds in 40 minutes of work.
Â
The Railsplitters have defeated the Tornados sixth straight times and won 13 of the 16 all-time meetings, but last season's contest in Tex Turner Arena went down to the wire. Brevard carved up the Railsplitters for 93 points on 48.6 percent shooting, but LMU was able to hold on for a 101-93 victory. Darius Moose scorched the Railsplitters for 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting, while Alex Moe tallied 21 points in the loss. The Railsplitters nearly shot 60 percent as a team. Ross had 13 points and nine assists in that contest, while
Tim Pierce (Albany, Ga.) added 14 points in 26 minutes.
Â
Brevard has never beaten the Railsplitters in Tex Turner Arena, dropping all eight decisions in Harrogate since the 2006-07 campaign.
Â
Suffocating defense has been a staple of
Josh Schertz's system since day one, but this has quietly become arguably the most formidable defensive until of his tenure. The Railsplitters lead the nation in both field-goal percentage defense while ranking second in three-point defense, limiting opponents to just 36.5 percent shooting from the field and 25.6 percent shooting from three. That currently stands as the lowest opponent field-goal percentage in the Schertz era as no previous LMU team has held its foes to a worse than a 37.8 percent clip for an entire season. The Railsplitters have also never completed a season in which opponents have made less than 30 percent of their three-pointers.
