Lockdown defense, balanced offense leads No. 2 Railsplitters to blowout of Brevard

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) scored 24 points, Keenan Peterson (College Park, Ga.) logged his third double-double of the season and the second-ranked Railsplitters (19-0, 13-0 SAC) put on a defensive clinic in an 88-49 evisceration of the Brevard Tornados (8-11, 6-7 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference men's hoops action on Wednesday at Tex Turner Arena. Lincoln Memorial extended the nation's longest winning streak to 19 with the victory, while earning its 25th straight home win and 24th consecutive SAC triumph.

The Railsplitters terrorized the Tornados defensively all night, relinquishing just 49 points on a dismal 17-for-58 effort from the field (29.3 percent). The 49 points were the fewest Lincoln Memorial has allowed in a SAC contest this season, falling two points below the 51 points put up by Queens on November 22. The Tornados had fewer total field goals than Lincoln Memorial had in either half. Brevard had an even harder time establishing an outside shot, making just six of its 22 three-point attempts.

The effort put forth in defending Brevard forward Darius Moose was indicative of the defensive performance as a whole. Moose entered Wednesday's contest ranked third in the league in scoring at 17.6 points per game and he had memories of success in Harrogate as he scored 29 points in last season's meeting in Tex Turner. He looked to be heading for another stellar performance, racking up 10 points less than eight minutes into the game. But Curtis Webb (Spartanburg, S.C.) - who checked in at the 12-minute mark - and company limited Moose to just two points the rest of the way. He finished the contest with 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting.

Luquon Choice nearly outscored the Tornados by himself in the first half as the Laurens, S.C. native racked up 20 first-half points on 7-of-10 shooting. That performance was a microcosm of an absolutely dominant half of basketball for the nation's second-ranked team. The Railsplitters shot 65.5 percent (19-for-29), limited Brevard to an 8-for-30 effort and went into the half with a commanding 49-26 edge.

Choice led all players with 24 points, cresting the 20-point threshold for the seventh time this season on a flawless 7-for-7 effort at the charity stripe. Keenan Peterson poured in 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. He also turned in a season-high with three blocks. Lorenza Ross (Savannah, Ga.) entered Wednesday's contest needing 16 points to join LMU's 1,000-point club, but that will have to wait one more game as he scored 14 points and handed out six assists in 29 minutes. Along with his spectacular individual defensive effort, Curtis Webb scored 12 points in 22 minutes off the bench. He also finished a perfect 7-for-7 at the line.

The Railsplitters shot better than 80 percent from the free throw line for only the second game this season, going 20-for-25 at the line. All told, Lincoln Memorial shot the rock at a 51.7 percent clip with a 6-for-16 mark (37.5 percent) mark from deep. The Railsplitters shot better than 50 percent for the 14th time this season.

The game got away from the Tornados early in the first half. After two quick buckets by Moose gave Brevard a 5-2 lead, the Railsplitters made six consecutive baskets to fuel a 13-0 run. Another Moose triple briefly cut the deficit back to five points, but Ross and Choice scored all nine points over a 9-2 run that made it a 24-12 game with 9:26 left in the half. The Tornados battled tough, cutting the lead to 36-24 on an Alex Moe layup at 4:06, but the Railsplitters concluded the half with a 13-2 flurry.

The Railsplitters never led by less than 22 in the second half, using an 8-0 sprint to build the lead to 31 points on a Peterson jumper with 9:12 left in regulation. The gap grew to 40 on an Emanuel Terry (Birmingham, Ala.) tip-in with two minutes left before Evan Dunham buried a three-pointer to cut the final margin to 39 points.

The win was Lincoln Memorial's 11th straight by double figures and fifth over that span by at least 20 points. The Railsplitters defeated Brevard for the seventh straight time, improving to 9-0 all-time at Tex Turner Arena.

Moose was the lone player to hit double figures for the Tornados. Stevie Williams scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds in 26 minutes, while Brayden Masten added six points in 24 minutes. Jaylon Debardlabon and Miles Leathers chipped in five points apiece.

The Railsplitters dominated nearly every phase, outrebounding the Tornados 48-31, logging a 46-22 advantage on points in the paint and outscoring Brevard 28-13 on bench points. The Railsplitters grabbed 10 offensive rebounds, which led to 13 second-chance points.

Beginning a stretch with six of their final nine regular-season games on the road, the Railsplitters travel to Hartsville, S.C. on Saturday afternoon for a South Atlantic Conference battle against the Coker Cobras. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
