HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (5-6, 3-5 SAC) turned in arguably their most well-rounded performance of the season and defeated the Anderson Trojans (7-6, 5-3 SAC) in straight sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Mary Mars Gym. In front of a frenzied crowd of well over 700, Lincoln Memorial won by set scores of 27-25, 26-24 and 25-20.
Â
The win was in many ways retribution for last season, when Anderson beat the Lady Railsplitters three times and ended Lincoln Memorial's season in the quarterfinals of the SAC Championship. The Lady Railsplitters topped Anderson for just the second time in the last six meetings to improve to 12-5 in the all-time series.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters hit .192 in the match and tied a season-low mark with 19 attack errors.
Â
Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) led all players with 11 kills, while
Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.) had nine kills on a .207 attack percentage.
Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) collected eight kills and 10 digs.
Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) produced eight kills on just 14 attempts, good for a gaudy .429 attack percentage.
Danielle Ged (Smyrna, Tenn.) accumulated seven kills with a .500 attacking clip.
Â
Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) racked up 36 assists and 16 digs to tally her ninth double-double of the season.
Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) matched Cash with 16 digs, while
Casey Mense (Littleton, Colo.) had 14 scoops.
Â
Lincoln Memorial had 12 block assists and one solo block to limit the Trojans to a .149 attack percentage with only 41 kills and 20 errors. Ged, Fleeman and Oates led the Lady Railsplitters with three blocks assists apiece, while Ged was responsible for the solo stonewall.
Â
Neither team could create any separation in the opening set as the lead never grew larger than two points for either Lincoln Memorial or Anderson until late in the frame. After 10 different ties, the Lady Railsplitters used kills from Mense and Holland to take a 16-14 lead at the midway point. The two teams traded rallies before Anderson churned out four straight kills to jump in front 20-17. Another 4-0 run, aided by three LMU attack errors, gave the Trojans a number of chances for set point at 24-19.
Â
Back-to-back kills from Fleeman and Oates pulled the Lady Railsplitters to within three and forced an Anderson timeout. After the timeout, the Trojans faltered three straight times in the attack and then Oates put down a kill to give LMU a 25-24 advantage. Cash tried to play a ball out of the net but was whistled for a ball-handling error to even the set at 25-25. The Lady Railsplitters then responded with kills from Fleeman and Cash to clinch the come-from-behind, 27-25 victory.
Â
A 3-1 Anderson spurt brought the second set to a 9-9 stalemate, but the Lady Railsplitters rode a lengthy service run from Cash, paced by two Fleeman kills, to build a 15-9 cushion. The lead held at six (17-11) later in the set, but the Trojans ripped off a 9-3 flurry to even the frame at 20-20. The Lady Railsplitters won three of the next five rallies to hold a narrow 23-22 lead before a Serena Jackson kill and an attack error gave the Trojans a chance to steal a set. Lincoln Memorial avoided that fate, though, as kills from Ged and Brock followed by a big block at the net composed a 3-0 closing run that gave the Lady Railsplitters a 26-24 victory and a 2-0 lead.
Â
The third set was deadlocked at 4-4 early. The Lady Railsplitters quickly asserted control, however, winning 12 of the ensuing 17 rallies to build a 16-9 lead. Brock was the catalyst for that run as the Lima, Ohio native collected four kills over that span. The Trojans whittled the Lady Railsplitters' lead down to 17-13, but a quick 4-0 run extended Lincoln Memorial's cushion to 21-13. Back-to-back reception errors and another attack error helped Anderson make it interesting late and trim the deficit to 22-18, but the Lady Railsplitters stiff-armed the Trojans and finished off the 25-20 win with a kill by Fleeman.
Â
Serena Jackson led Anderson with nine kills. Allison Gaminde had eight kills on a .444 attack percentage, while Marissa Mitter and Jessica Harris had seven kills apiece. Priscilla Irizarry notched 35 assists and 16 digs, while Megan Embry led all players with 20 digs.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters collected just their second straight-set win of the season and first since beating Erskine 3-0 on the second day of the 2015 campaign (September 5). It was only the sixth straight-set triumph for the program over the past two seasons combined.
Â
Next up, the Lady Railsplitters welcome the Newberry Wolves to Mary Mars Gym for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday. Lincoln Memorial will be looking for its first home win against the Wolves since 2011.
