Brock's big day leads Lady Railsplitters in win over Newberry

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (6-6, 4-5 SAC) pounded out a season-best .271 attack percentage and frustrated the Newberry Wolves' (6-8, 2-7 SAC) attack in a 3-1 win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Mary Mars Gymnasium. Lincoln Memorial snapped a three-match home losing streak against Newberry by set scores of 25-13, 25-16, 20-25 and 25-18.

The Lady Railsplitters produced 57 kills on 140 attempts while staying below 20 attack errors for the second consecutive match. Before last night's win over Anderson, they had at least 20 attacking blunders in nine straight matches. The Lady Railsplitters used a .357 attack percentage in set one and a ridiculous .485 clip in the final frame to post a season-high .271 attack percentage. It was just the third time LMU has surpassed the .200 percent threshold, but it was the second straight match they've hit above .190.

Turning in the best performance of her tenure with the Lady Railsplitters, Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) matched her career high with 17 kills on a .519 attack percentage. Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) had 10 kills and 14 digs, while Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) also had 10 kills but struggled at time with seven errors. With characteristic efficiency, Danielle Ged (Smyrna, Tenn.) tallied six kills on only 13 attempts, as she increased her hitting percentage in SAC matches to .295.

Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) filled up the stat sheet with 44 assists, 12 digs, four kills and a service ace. Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) contributed 15 digs and half of LMU's six service aces with three.

The Lady Railsplitters' block frustrated the Wolves and played a factor in limiting the visiting unit to a .136 attack percentage with 24 errors. Six different LMU players finished with multiple blocks assists, as the Lady Railsplitters racked up 15 as a team. Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.) paced the home team with four while Fleeman had three.

Newberry put up little to no resistance in the opening stanza, as the Lady Railsplitters took the first five points of the set and won 19 of the first 23 rallies to build an insurmountable 19-4 advantage. The Wolves were their own worst enemy during that run, issuing six attack errors over a 9-0 LMU spurt. Newberry made it respectable late in the set, but back-to-back attack errors clinched the Lady Railsplitters' 25-13 victory. Lincoln Memorial hit .357 in the set to a paltry .026 effort for the Wolves. Brock had four kills on an .800 attacking clip.

Kills from Oates and Brock gave the Lady Railsplitters an 8-4 lead in the second set. Newberry used back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 8-7, but Lincoln Memorial followed that up by taking the point in 10 of the next 12 possessions. Six of those points came via a kill. A 3-0 flurry later in the set increased the Lady Railsplitters' cushion to 21-10. Three straight kills from Samantha De Jong and two LMU attack errors pulled the Wolves to within seven at 22-15, but an Allison McKinnon (Missouri City, Texas) kill concluded the Lady Railsplitters' 25-16 victory.

The Lady Railsplitters' attack briefly disappeared in the third set as they gave the Wolves some life by hitting .087 and committing nine errors. Newberry took the first four points and eventually carried that out to a 14-8 lead after two kills from Mary Siebert. Kills by Fleeman and McKinnon swung the momentum momentarily and cut the Wolves' lead to 16-15, forcing a timeout from the Newberry sideline. Coming out of that break, though, the Wolves increased their lead to 20-15 with a pair of Logan Hayward terminations. The Lady Railsplitters wouldn't get any closer than four points the rest of the way as a Siebert kill clinched a 25-20 Newberry win.

Lincoln Memorial's offense came back to life in a big way in the fourth frame, producing 19 kills on an eye-popping .485 attack percentage. Brock was once again at the center of that effort, finishing off all five of her attack attempts. Holland and Fleeman added four kills in the set. The Lady Railsplitters took control of the set early, turning a slim 5-4 lead into an 11-4 cushion with a 6-0 run. A kill by Holland made it 15-8 midway through the set, while a Fleeman put away made it 23-16 later in the frame. Holland ended the 25-18 win with a kill.

The Lady Railsplitters topped Newberry at Mary Mars Gym for the first time since 2011, ending a three-match home losing skid to the Wolves and improving to 16-6 in the all-time series.

Newberry, who dropped its sixth consecutive match, was led by Logan Hayward's 10 kills. Mary Siebert and Samantha De Jong had nine kills apiece. Kensley Jordan led all players with 16 digs, while Maggie Marsh paced the Wolves with 20 assists.

The Lady Railsplitters wrap up their five-match homestand on Tuesday when they play host to the Mars Hill Lions for a 7 p.m. South Atlantic Conference contest.
