HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Mars Hill Lions (4-11, 2-7 SAC) scored in the dying seconds of the first half and made that goal stand up in a 1-0 win over the Lady Railsplitters (4-7-3, 2-5-2 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday at the LMU Soccer Complex.
Lincoln Memorial lost despite outshooting Mars Hill 19-7 in the match and limiting the Lions to just one second-half shot attempt.
The Lady Railsplitters had a stranglehold on possession through the first 30 minutes of regulation, amassing an 8-1 edge in shots including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal. But the Lions were the aggressors over the last third of the first half, outshooting Lincoln Memorial 5-1 with all five shots landing on goal.
That pressure eventually cracked the Lincoln Memorial defense with just seconds left in the first frame. With seven seconds remaining and the 10-second countdown sounding over the PA system, LMU's
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.) stonewalled a point-blank shot from Kanani Thomas, but the save deflected directly to Julia Johnson, who put the Lions ahead 1-0 at the half.
The Lady Railsplitters outshot the Lions 10-1 in the second half with four shots on goal, but Mars Hill's Tori Stajduhar never bent, making eight saves to shut out Lincoln Memorial.
The Lady Railsplitters got their best chance of the match and forced Stajduhar to make her most athletic save of the day in the 78th minute , when
Olivia Thompson (Melbourne, Fla.) crossed the ball from the right side into
Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada). Hunter then headed it from just in front of the net, but Stajduhar dove to her right just before the ball skirted over the goal line to keep the Lady Railsplitters off the board.
Hunter and
Claire Leasure (Franklin, Tenn.) led the Lady Railsplitters with four shots apiece, while Thompson contributed three shots and a pair of shots on goal.
Lundy and
Kayla Stephens (Keller, Texas) split time in net for Lincoln Memorial. Lundy conceded one goal and made three saves in the first half, while Stephens faced just a single shot without a stop in the second stanza.
Johnson, Morgan Meyer and Kanani Thomas paced the Lions with two shot attempts apiece.
The Lady Railsplitters next travel to Anderson, S.C. on Saturday for a SAC bout against the Anderson Trojans. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first touch.
