Frenzied Mary Mars crowd compels Lady Railsplitters to straight-set win over Carson-Newman

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (11-11, 8-8 SAC) recorded their highest hitting percentage in a match since the 2013 season in a dominant 25-12, 25-20, 25-17 victory over the Carson-Newman Eagles (21-4, 14-2 SAC) on Tuesday night in front of a raucous Mary Mars Gymnasium crowd.

Lincoln Memorial rallied behind a loud and energetic crowd of more than 900 spectators to end a three-match losing skid against the Eagles and halt Carson-Newman's seven-match winning streak. In the process, the Lady Railsplitters handed the Eagles their first SAC road loss since the 2013 season.

"We've had great weekday crowds all season and tonight was no exception," LMU head volleyball coach Jenny Michael said. "It was a great night to be a college student-athlete. This is what these girls came here for: to be a part of this type of environment. As coaches, we get caught up in the wins and losses, but it's really more about the experience, and tonight was a great experience."

The Lady Railsplitters produced a season-high .358 attack percentage and matched a season-low with eight attack errors, compiling the program's highest single-match hitting percentage since a win over Coker on November 1, 2013 while tallying the most efficient output a Carson-Newman team has allowed since 2010. Lincoln Memorial improved to 30-18 all-time against Carson-Newman and swept the Eagles for the first time since 2013.

Lincoln Memorial limited Carson-Newman to 35 kills and a .097 hitting percentage, their second-lowest mark of the season. The Eagles entered Tuesday night's match hitting .209 as a team.

The Lady Railsplitters finished with 38 assists, 43 digs, 10 block assists and four service aces, while the Eagles had 35 assists, 40 digs, four aces and just two block assists.

Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) racked up 15 kills on just 24 attempts for a ridiculous .500 attack percentage while adding eight digs and a pair of block assists. Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) accounted for nine kills on a .333 hitting percentage with two digs. Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) and Danielle Ged (Smyrna, Tenn.) had six kills apiece, with Ged hitting an extremely efficient .312. Fleeman also contributed eight digs. Jazzy Oates (Franklin, Tenn.) notched five kills and led the Lady Railsplitters with five block assists. Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) dished out 34 assists with six digs, while Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs. Tenn.) paced all players with 12 digs.

The Lady Railsplitters surged out of the gate in set one, using a 3-0 flurry capped by a kill from Brock to take a commanding 14-6 lead. A kill and a service ace put two straight points on the board for Carson-Newman, but the Lady Railsplitters rode the serve of Casey Mense (Littleton, Colo.) on a 5-0 run to extend the cushion to 19-8. After a quick 3-0 spurt by the Eagles, the Lady Railsplitters won six of the last seven rallies in the set to grab a 25-12 victory. 15 of LMU's 25 points in the set were earned via the kill, as the Lady Railsplitters hit .448 in the frame while C-N hit .000 with seven kills and seven errors.

The Eagles held sway early in set two, taking a 10-9 lead on one of the few LMU attack errors. But the Lady Railsplitters would control the ensuing passage of play and push in front 15-12 on a kill by Oates to force a timeout from the Carson-Newman sideline. After that brief stop in the action, the Eagles fought back to tie the set at 16-16 on an ace, but the Lady Railsplitters won six of the next eight points to assume a 22-18 edge. A C-N service error followed by a Holland kill later clinched the Lady Railsplitters' 25-20 win.

Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman battled back and forth early in the third frame, with a kill by Molly Locke bringing the set to a 12-12 stalemate. The Lady Railsplitters then regained sideout on a Sara Fairley attack error to kick-start an 8-0 run, paced by two kills from Holland, to take a commanding 20-12 lead. The Eagles were never able to trim the deficit to less than six after that, as a kill by Brock and a C-N attack error completed the straight-set lambasting 25-17. The Lady Railsplitters once again produced 15 points via the kill, hitting .414 in the set.

Locke and Maddie Borch led the Eagles with nine kills apiece, while Fairley chipped in with eight kills, but committed six attack errors. Natalie Harris had six kills. Anna Patton led the Eagles in assists with 29, while Megan Morris had a team-high nine digs.

The Lady Railsplitters now begin a stretch that sends them on the road for five of the last six matches of the regular season, beginning with a 7 p.m. first serve at Coker on Friday, October 30.
