VOLLEYBALL CENTRAL: Mars Hill

Lady Railsplitters take part in Dig Pink initiative and sign Team Impact athlete

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (6-6, 4-5 SAC) look to end their five-match homestand on a high note when they host the Mars Hill Lions (4-8, 2-6 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Mary Mars Gymnasium. First serve between Lincoln Memorial and Mars Hill is scheduled for 7 p.m.

It will be a busy night in Harrogate as the Lady Railsplitters will be hosting their Dig Pink Match to raise money and awareness for the Side-Out Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to fundraising efforts in support of breast cancer research and victims. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Tuesday's match in support of the Dig Pink Rally initiative.

Additionally, with the help of Team Impact, the Lady Railsplitters will add a special new member to their team when they sign Madi Seidel. The volleyball team will welcome Madi to the team via a pre-match signing and introductory press conference at 5:45. Madi will then be introduced to the Mary Mars faithful alongside her newest teammates.

The LMU School of Business will also be holding a pre-match tailgate in the Mary Mars parking lot with free chili and Fritos.

The Lady Railsplitters started the month of October with a bang this past weekend, beating Anderson in straight sets on Friday before completing the 2-0 weekend with a four-set victory over Newberry on Saturday.

Offensive efficiency, and the subsequent increase in production, has been the biggest proponent of the Lady Railsplitters' recent surge, which has seen them win three of their last four matches. After hitting .160 with 12.17 kills per set in 10 matches in September, Lincoln Memorial has accumulated 15 kills per set on a .230 attack percentage in its first two matches in October. The Lady Railsplitters hit better than .190 just once in their first eight matches of the season, but they have accomplished that feat three times in their past four outings.

Junior outside hitter Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) had a big weekend for the Lady Railsplitters, posting eight kills on a .429 attack percentage in the win over Anderson before matching her career high with 17 kills on a .519 clip against Newberry. The Lima, Ohio native is now tied with Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) for the team lead in total kills (125) and kills per set (2.66), as she has tallied 11-plus kills in five of her last seven appearances.

Though her contributions have been minimal while working to adjust to the college game, freshman middle Danielle Ged (Smyrna, Tenn.) has also produced efficiently when given the chance. Ged, who is averaging 1.39 kills per set, is hitting .295 in SAC matches, the sixth-best mark in the league. She combined for 13 kills last weekend for the Lady Railsplitters.

Lincoln Memorial is aiming for its second three-match winning streak of the season and first since winning three of the first four matches of the season.

First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Mary Mars Gym. Live stat and video links will be available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.

The Lions enter Tuesday's match in 10th in the South Atlantic Conference standings with hopes of snapping a four-game losing skid. Mars Hill played just one match last week, slipping to 2-6 in league play with a four-set loss (25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 14-25) at Brevard.

Along with a variety of issues on the offensive end, where they rank 11th in the SAC with 11.02 kills per set in league contest on a paltry .128 attack percentage, the Lions have had trouble limiting opposing offenses. In 12 matches this season, opponents are producing 12.9 kills per set on a .201 attack percentage, a number that would rank fourth in the conference. That is partially due to blocking up front, as the Lions are 11th in the SAC in blocks per set (1.08) and total blocks (54).

The Lions are a relatively young team, though, as 10 underclassmen have appeared in at least one match for Mars Hill this season.

Sophomores Lauren Hochstetler and Rebecca Butler pace the Lions offensively. Hochstetler is accounting for a team best 3.02 kills per set on a .163 attack percentage with 2.90 digs per set, while Butler is hitting .204 with 2.55 kills per set and 4.35 digs per frame. Mary Kate Griffin (2.30) and Maddie Spurgeon (2.20) are also producing more than two kills per set.

The Lions' two-setter system is engineered by junior Andie Russell and sophomore Sara Fahrenbrook. Russell is averaging 6.42 assists per set. Fahrenbrook hands out 3.90 helpers per frame. Victoria Kaiser leads the Lions with 5.64 digs a set.

The Lady Railsplitters have mostly dominated the all-time series against Mars Hill, winning 20 of the 28 head-to-head meetings. The Lady Railsplitters have won the last three matches at Mary Mars, including a 3-1 victory in 2014. Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) collected 17 kills (and 11 errors) in that match, while Fleeman had 11. Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) accumulated 45 assists and 12 digs.
