Top-seeded Eagles await Lady Railsplitters in SAC Championship quarterfinals

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- In the first postseason meeting between two longtime rivals in 11 years, the eight-seeded Lady Railsplitters (5-8-3) travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to face the top-seeded Carson-Newman Eagles (15-2) in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The winner of that contest advances to the semifinal round to play either Lenoir-Rhyne or Anderson on Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.

Kadie Soall (Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada) tallied the game-winning goal in her final appearance at the LMU Soccer Complex to help the Lady Railsplitters clinch their spot in the SAC tournament field.

In what was essentially a win-or-go home scenario, Lincoln Memorial hosted the Catawba Indians in the regular season finale on Saturday. The match was played to a complete and utter stalemate until Soall broke the scoreless tie with a dazzling build-up in the 72nd minute. After recovering a loose ball at midfield, Soall carried some space into the Lady Railsplitters' attacking front and dished it off to Caroline Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who back heeled it back in Soall's direction. After a brief battle for the ball, Soall came away with it in front of the goal and flicked it over the Indians' keeper for her third marker of the season.

That snapped an eight-match scoreless streak for Soall dating back to her two-goal performance against Tusculum on September 23. It also ended a two-match scoreless streak for the Lady Railsplitters, who were shutout by both Mars Hill and Anderson after pounding Coker 4-1.

There's no time to celebrate, though, as now Lincoln Memorial shifts its attention to the South Atlantic Conference regular season champion and top-seeded Carson-Newman Eagles, who authored one of the more impressive one-season turnarounds in league history. The Eagles went 3-14 overall and 1-10 in SAC play last season, finishing 11th in the league standings. This season, Carson-Newman won five times as many matches and topped runner-up Wingate by four points.

The Eagles have not lost since dropping a 2-1 decision to Anderson in Spartanburg, S.C. on October 3, nailing down eight consecutive wins that has seen them outscore their opponents by a combined total of 24-4. Lincoln Memorial was coincidentally the first cog in that eight-match winning streak as Carson-Newman defeated the Lady Railsplitters 3-0 on October 7 at the LMU Soccer Complex.

Carson-Newman outshot the Lady Railsplitters 18-13 and limited the home team to two shots on goal, using goals in the sixth, 54th and 66th minutes to pace the victory.

Carson-Newman boasts an absolutely lethal offensive attack that has piled up 366 shots in 17 matches, scoring 2.8 goals on a league-leading 21.5 shots per game. The Eagles have made life difficult for opposing goalkeepers all season with a SAC-high 181 shots on goal, which averages out to more than 10 and a half shots on goal per match. C-N has tallied 34 goals against SAC opponents this season, leading the league in that category.

With freshman netminder Jessica Fraiture leading the charge, the Eagles are one of five teams in the South Atlantic Conference conceding less than a goal per match, as they have served up just 16 goals total and an average of 0.93 per contest. Fraiture is ranked third in the league with a 0.88 goals against average that includes 46 saves, a .754 save percentage and five clean slates.

Eight SAC players have scored at least 10 goals this season, and two of those players exist in the Eagles' attacking third. Junior forward Julianne Herrity has accounted for 14 goals and two assists on 75 shots and 40 shots on goal, ranking fourth in the league in goals scored. Freshman midfielder Varin Ness has produced 10 goals and four assists on 46 shots and 24 shots on goal, as she is tied for sixth in the SAC in goals. Senior Nikki McWilliams has chipped in seven goals and two assists while Camilla Olsson and Megan Peterson have combined for six goals and five assists. Heida Ragney leads the South Atlantic Conference with eight assists.

Ness, Herrity and McWilliams each scored in the Eagles' regular season win over Lincoln Memorial.

The Lady Railsplitters and Eagles are colliding in postseason play for the first time since then No. 8 nationally-ranked Carson-Newman defeated Lincoln Memorial 3-1 deep in the 2004 NCAA tournament. Lincoln Memorial trails the all-time series 7-13-1, but has won the last two meetings in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Lady Railsplitters bested the Eagles 3-1 in 2012 and captured a 4-3 double overtime victory in 2014.
