BREVARD, N.C. -- Sophomore shooting guard
Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) rained in a season-high 27 points as the fifth-ranked Railsplitters (25-1, 19-1 SAC) outscored the Brevard Tornados (10-16, 8-12 SAC) by 13 points in the second half in an 87-75 win in Brevard, N.C. on Monday night.
Â
It was a story of two halves for the Railsplitters. In the first stanza, Lincoln Memorial shot 58.6 percent (17-for-29), but allowed the Tornados to post a 48.4 percent (15-for-31) clip with five three-pointers. The Railsplitters and Tornados finished tied with 15 rebounds in the period, while Brevard scrounged for seven offensive boards. Lincoln Memorial trailed 44-43 after one period.
Â
Things completely changed in the second stanza as the Railsplitters limited the Tornados to 9-for-26 shooting (34.6 percent) with a 3-for-11 (27.3 percent) clip from long distance. Lincoln Memorial accounted for a 23-18 rebounding edge and allowed only four offensive boards. The Railsplitters outscored the Tornados 44-31 in the last 20 minutes of action.
Â
Choice led all players with 27 points, going 7-for-13 from the field and 5-for-10 from three-point range. The Laurens, S.C. native increased his season total for triples to 88, two shy of matching LMU's single-season record set by David Hopper during the 1990-91 campaign. Choice added six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in 38 minutes of action.
Â
Gerel Simmons (Accokeek, Md.) went 8-for-8 at the charity stripe and contributed 16 points in 28 minutes off of the bench.
Lorenza Ross (Savannah, Ga.) posted 11 points, a game-leading five assists and two rebounds.
Dorian Pinson (Greenville, S.C.) filled out the stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in 22 minutes of burn.
Â
Freshman
Emanuel Terry (Birmingham, Ala.) was arguably the one most responsible for the Railsplitters' second-half turnaround. Terry did not record a stat in one minute of action in the first half. In 18 second-half minutes, Terry poured in 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and matched a career-high with 11 rebounds. Eight of Terry's 15 points were scored either off of a dunk or a tip-in at the rim.
Â
The Railsplitters finished shooting 53.8 percent (28-for-52) from the field, 50 percent (8-for-16) from three and 71.9 percent (23-for-32) at the free-throw line. Brevard shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-for-21) from three and 70.4 percent (19-for-27) at the charity stripe.
Â
After attempting just four free throws in the first half, the Railsplitters went to the line 28 times in the second stanza.
Â
The Tornados held sway throughout much of the first frame, using buckets by Brayden Masten, Trevon Shaw and Darius Moose to take an 18-10 lead at the 11:49 mark. The Railsplitters used an 11-3 spurt to regain a 21-20 edge on a Pinson layup at 8:47, but Brevard scored seven unanswered points to assume a 27-21 lead with 6:42 left in the half. A 10-2 LMU flurry evened the game at 31-31 and it remained tight until the end of the half.
Â
Two Phil Wallace free throws pushed the Tornados back out to a 37-33 cushion at 1:49. Choice buried a three and hit two free throws, and then Simmons knocked down a triple to tie the game at 41-41 with 44 seconds left. An Alex Moe three and a
Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.) layup ended the half as the Railsplitters went into the locker room trailing by one.
Â
Choice accounted for 18 of his 27 points in the first half.
Â
Choice was fouled while shooting a three-pointer early in the second half, and he made all three of his free throws to give the Railsplitters the lead for good with 16:28 left in regulation. But Lincoln Memorial never led by more than six points over the next seven and a half minutes until using a big run to put the game out of reach.
Â
Two Miles Leathers free throws at 8:58 trimmed the LMU lead to 62-58. That was when the Railsplitters went on the run that they had been looking for, turning a four-point lead into a 17-point cushion with a 14-1 flurry. Pinson's tip-in with 5:37 left concluded the run and gave the Railsplitters a commanding 74-59 advantage. A Ross free throw bulged Lincoln Memorial in front 79-61 at 4:14.
Â
Brevard briefly pulled to within 12 points on a Leathers three-pointer, but a Choice free throw and a tip-in by Terry made it 82-67 with 1:51 left. LMU's last five points came at the free-throw line, where they closed out the Tornados in the final minute.
Â
Moe led Brevard with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Moose scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds, handed out four assists and collected two steals. Shaw posted 15 points on 13 shot attempts. Leathers hauled in a team-high nine rebounds and scored seven points.
Â
The Railsplitters defeated Brevard for the eighth straight time dating back to the 2011-12 season and extended the nation's longest road winning streak to 12 games.
Â
Lincoln Memorial hits the third leg of a closing stretch that features four games in seven days on Wednesday, traveling to Jefferson City, Tenn. looking to avenge its lone loss of the season against the Carson-Newman Eagles. Tip-off between the Railsplitters and Eagles is set for 8 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse.
