GATLINBURG, Tenn. – The Wingate Bulldogs (5-3, 2-1 SAC) opened by scoring 11 unanswered goals and never looked back in an 18-1 win over the Lady Railsplitters (0-4, 0-3 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday at the Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg, Tenn.
Bre'Asia James's (Vero Beach, Fla.) streak of consecutive matches with a goal ended at three, but
Autumn Beddington (Newburgh, Ind.) kept hers alive by registering Lincoln Memorial's only goal of the match at the 9:31 mark of the first half. James was credited with the assist on the play, making it four-straight games with a point.
That goal came far too late, though, as Wingate had already rolled out to an 11-0 lead by that point. Erin Murphy, Emily Nosek and Brittany Andrews each tallied two goals over that 11-0 run that consumed the first 20 minutes of the match.
The Bulldogs added one more goal before the first half ended and outscored the Lady Railsplitters 6-0 in the second half.
Wingate picked up 30 of the 44 ground balls, outshot the Lady Railsplitters 41-4, and won 16 of the 21 draw controls. Lincoln Memorial committed 26 turnovers and put only three shots on goal.
McKenzie Edds (Maynardville, Tenn.) led the Lady Railsplitters with five ground balls, while James scooped up four ground balls. Beddington accounted for two of LMU's four shot attempts.
Goalkeeper
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) faced 32 shots and stonewalled 14 of those opportunities. Novak prevented the Bulldogs from scoring on two of their three free-position shots.
Murphy led the Bulldogs with six goals and an assist, while Andrews and Jaclyn Chiesa contributed three goals apiece. Chiesa led all players in the match with seven ground balls.
The Lady Railsplitters travel to Salisbury, N.C. on Saturday for an 11 a.m. SAC match against the Catawba Indians.
