Railsplitters explode in doubleheader sweep of Virginia-Wise

WISE, Va. -- Kyle Floyd (Windsor, Ill.) and Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) fronted an offensive attack that combined for 21 runs and 27 hits as the Railsplitters (14-10) swept a nonconference baseball doubleheader from the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers (0-10) in Wise, Va. on Wednesday. Lincoln Memorial earned a decisive 12-0 win in the opener and completed the sweep by holding off the Cavaliers in a 10-9 victory in the nightcap.

Floyd kick-started his 5-for-6 day at the plate by driving in the first run of the doubleheader for the Railsplitters, following up a Scott Miller (Knoxville, Tenn.) double with an RBI, two-out double in the top of the first frame.

That 1-0 lead quickly bulged to 5-0 for Lincoln Memorial in the top of the third, as Miller slugged his fourth home run of the season, Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) drove in Floyd with a double, Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored another with an RBI groundout, and Augustine was brought in by a wild pitch.

The Railsplitters tacked on another in the top of the fourth on a run-scoring groundout off the bat of Jonathan Lowe (Sidney, Ohio), while a throwing error and an Augustine double brought two more runs across for the Railsplitters in the top of the sixth.

The visiting unit continued to pile up runs in the top of the seventh, pushing the deficit into double figures with another four-run outburst. Muta Crusoe (Bellwood, Ill.) collected his second career RBI with a run-producing fielder's choice, while Lowe drove in another run with a base knock back up the middle. Augustine notched his third hit and third RBI of the ballgame with a single, while Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.) elicited a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

The Cavaliers put a runner on third base on only two occasions. Chaz Tanner singled to open up the bottom of the first, moved to second on another single and advanced to third on a fielder's choice, but he was left stranded there following a strikeout and a fly out. Tye Marshall doubled and moved over to third on a wild pitch in the sixth, but Matthew Wright lined out to end the threat.

Jake Watkins (Powder Springs, Ga.) improved to 2-0 for the Railsplitters, spinning five shutout innings with four strikeouts and six hits allowed. Carson Taylor (Fayetteville, Tenn.) was nearly perfect in two innings of relief, allowing a single hit and walk over that span.

Floyd and Augustine both finished 3-for-4, while Miller, Tanner Latham (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) posted two hits apiece.

Neiderland hammered two home runs to help stake the Railsplitters to an early 6-0 advantage in game two. Neiderland led off the first frame with a solo shot, jumping off a three-run outburst. Miller walked and scored on a double by Floyd, while an error allowed Kalman, who singled earlier in the inning, to touch home.

Rodriguez singled in front of Neiderland in the top of the second and the Thompson Station, Tenn. native delivered his second home run in as many innings to bulge the lead to 5-0. The lead increased to 6-0 the next inning on a sacrifice fly out from Valdez.

The Cavaliers slowly whittled away at the Railsplitters' lead over the next few innings. Bill Steven trimmed the deficit to 6-2 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, while run-scoring singles from Chaz Tanner and Brett Yates pushed Virginia-Wise to within two runs.

The Railsplitters got all four of those runs back in the top of the sixth, when Rodriguez walked and Neiderland singled to open up the inning. Kalman plated both runners with a single down the left field line, and Floyd followed that up with a two-run bomb over the left center fence.

Virginia-Wise went down in one-two-three order in the sixth, but nearly rallied all the way back in the seventh. The first six batters reached against LMU relief pitcher Nick Morabito (Vienna, Va.), and three runs scored on back-to-back singles and a walk from Yates, Steven and Bryan Andrews. Ryan Burlison (Romeoville, Ill.) was quickly brought in from the bullpen, but Nick Sturgill drove in two more runs with a one-out single, cutting the deficit to 10-9.

Just as quickly as it was built, the drama subsided as Burlison induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game, picking up his fifth save of the season.

Burlison maintained the win for Augustine, who allowed six hits and four runs with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Chase Randolph (Harriman, Tenn.) dazzled in 1 2/3 innings relief, giving up just one hit with one strikeout over that span.

Neiderland and Floyd drove in three runs apiece and combined to go 5-for-6 at the plate. Kalman was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lowe also chipped in two hits in the victory.

The Railsplitters welcome Ohio Valley to Lamar Hennon Field this weekend for a three-game nonconference series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch in that twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
