HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team slugged five more home runs and racked up 25 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots (0-9) in NCAA Division II action on Saturday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field.
Â
The Railsplitters (16-10) scored five runs in the fourth and seven runs in the sixth to pace a 15-5 evisceration of the Fighting Scots in Saturday's first game, and rode the wave of
Grant Painter's (Knoxville, Tenn.) complete-game gem in a 5-1 victory in game two.
Â
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 15, Ohio Valley 5Â
The Railsplitters mustered only a single hit - a two-out double by
Jonathan Lowe (Sidney, Ohio) - through the first three innings, while Ohio Valley used an RBI single from Logan Dan in the top of the third to establish an early 1-0 cushion.
Â
Lincoln Memorial busted loose in the home half of the fourth, though, putting the first six batters of the inning on base and piling up five runs on five hits. An error allowed
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who reached on a leadoff single, to score, while a double by Lowe gave the Railsplitters a 2-1 cushion.
Nick Morabito (Vienna, Va.) drove in two runs with a single back up the box, while
Kelvin Brito (Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) concluded the scoring with a double into left field.
Â
The Railsplitters and Fighting Scots traded two runs in the bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth. A misplayed throw by the Ohio Valley catcher allowed a run to score, while a wild pitch allowed another to score just minutes later. OVU got both runs back in the next half inning as two separate errors on the same play pushed Bruno Holmann in, and Cody Morris scored on an RBI groundout from Chris Perna.
Â
The Railsplitters exploded in the home half of that inning and put the game completely out of reach, scoring seven runs on five hits. Kalman drove in two runs with a double into the right-center gap,
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) plated another with an RBI double, Morabito blasted a two-run home run, and
Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.) hit a no-doubt, two-run home run - his first of the season - to fuel the seven-run outburst.
Â
Lowe added another run to the Railsplitters' ledger in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to left field. Ohio Valley picked up two runs down the stretch on a sacrifice lineout from Austin Cottrell and an RBI single from Ian Sullinger.
Â
Six different players finished with multiple hits in the contest for the Railsplitters, led by Lowe's 3-for-5 showing. Morabito drove in four runs with a pair of hits, while
Ryan Burlison (Romeoville, Ill.) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Kalman accounted for a pair of runs, hits and RBI. Augustine added two hits.
Â
Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) jumped back to .500 (2-2) after tossing five innings with seven hits and one earned run allowed. Jean struck out six over that span.
Â
Tyler Proctor led Ohio Valley at the plate by going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Logan Dan went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tucker Hughes was saddled with the loss after getting tagged with five earned runs and seven hits in five innings of work.
Â
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 5, Ohio Valley 1Â
Painter dazzled in the complete-game performance, allowing just four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. The Knoxville, Tenn. native did not issue a walk in the contest and improved to 3-3 on the season.
Â
All but one of the six total runs scored in the game came via a home run.
Â
Lowe broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second with a leadoff solo home run, while Brito blasted another solo home run just two batters later to stake the Railsplitters to a 2-0 lead.
Â
Brito was brought back to the plate in the bottom of the third and it was déjà vu all over again as the Yabucoa, Puerto Rico native belted his second home run of the game, this time a two-run blast, to extend the lead to 4-0. Brito, who hadn't homered since February 7 prior to Saturday's twinbill, has now hit four home runs this season.
Â
The Railsplitters conjured up the only run not to come off of a home run in the bottom of the fifth as Lowe singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout. Brito was intentionally walked with two outs, putting runners on first and third. A double steal then allowed Lowe to score and push the lead to 5-0.
Â
Ohio Valley picked up its only run of the game in the visitor's half of the seventh on a leadoff home run from Dan. Painter followed up Dan's dinger by striking out Trey Engle, Christian Hall and Sullinger to dust off his complete game.
Â
Brito was 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Valdez and Lowe chipped in two hits apiece.
Â
Eric Schweitzer fell to 0-3 for Ohio Valley, allowing nine hits and five earned runs in six innings of work. Four different players registered a single hit for the Fighting Scots.
Â
Lincoln Memorial and Ohio Valley will complete their three-game set on Sunday with a nine-inning tilt slated for a noon start.
