HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Goalkeeper
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) broke the South Atlantic Conference single-game record for saves and
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) registered the first two goals for the Lady Railsplitters (0-6, 0-5 SAC) at the LMU Lacrosse Complex in a 16-2 loss to the Tusculum Pioneers (7-2, 3-1 SAC) on Wednesday in Harrogate, Tenn.
Â
Novak faced steady and unrelenting pressure from start to finish, and she stood up to that test for most of the afternoon, allowing Tusculum to account for only 16 goals on 46 shot attempts. The Grosse Pointe Farms, Ind. native took over the SAC lead for saves and reset the league's single-season watermark for stonewalls with 22 saves, surpassing Brevard's Melissa Harris in the SAC history books. Harris made 20 stops three different times in 2014. Novak made 19 of her 22 stops in the first stanza.
Â
Despite Novak's best effort, the Pioneers plowed out to a 6-0 lead. Madison Malone scored in unassisted fashion just 55 seconds into the match, while Erin Sims tacked one on at the 26:25 mark. Sims scored again, as did Cheyenne Bray, Rachel Del Duca and Calyn Kelly, over the next six minutes to put Tusculum in front by a commanding margin.
Â
James broke Lincoln Memorial's scoring drought and tallied the first goal for the women's program at the LMU Lacrosse Complex at the 12:38 mark, slashing into the middle and beating Tusculum keeper Brooke Wagner.
Â
The Pioneers put four more goals in before the half ended, though, going into the break with a 10-1 advantage. Bray capped that 4-0 flurry with back-to-back goals in the final minute of the half.
Â
Savannah Elliott gave the Pioneers an 11-1 lead just 14 seconds into the second half, but James scored her second goal of the match and 12th of the season with 28:19 remaining in regulation. That would be the Lady Railsplitters' final goal as Tusculum finished with five unanswered scores.
Â
Tusculum went 15-for-17 on clear attempts, while the Lady Railsplitters were 13-for-29 in that department. Lincoln Memorial was much improved in the second half, going 4-for-9 on clearances.
Â
The Pioneers posted a 47-29 ground ball edge.
Autumn Beddington (Newburgh, Ind.) led the Lady Railsplitters with five ground balls, while
Hannah Furrer (Oneida, Tenn.) picked up four. Nine different Pioneers had at least three ground balls in the match, led by five apiece from Sims and Malone.
Â
James accounted for six of the Lady Railsplitters' eight shot attempts. Bray led all players in that department with eight shots and seven shots on goal.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters committed 35 turnovers, but forced Tusculum into 16 miscues.
Ashli Motsch (Knoxville, Tenn.) matched Tusculum's Sims with a game-high four caused turnovers.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters welcome the Queens Royals to the LMU Lacrosse Complex on Saturday, with first draw control set for 1 p.m. in Harrogate.Â
