BREVARD, N.C. -- Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) struck out a career-high 10 batters and the Railsplitters (18-13, 10-7 SAC) collected a season-high 17 hits in game one, headlining a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader split with the Brevard Tornados (15-18, 9-13 SAC) on Saturday at Gil Coan Field in Brevard, N.C. Lincoln Memorial captured a 12-2 win in the opener of the twinbill, while Brevard bounced back with a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
Â
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 12, Brevard 2Â
Jean improved to 3-2 on the season with one of his most impressive starts of the season, allowing just one earned run and seven hits in seven innings of work. The Franklin, Tenn. native fanned a career-best 10 batters and walked two over that span.
Â
Brevard's Hunter Donaldson was nearly as good in 7 1/3 innings, relinquishing eight hits and four earned runs before things fell apart for the bullpen down the stretch.
Â
The Railsplitters were limited to two hits through the first four frames, but broke through in the top of the fifth.
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) kicked off the inning with a triple into the gap in right center, and he scored just one batter later on a wild pitch.
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) singled after Augustine scored, advanced to second on a walked batter and moved to third on an error from the Tornado third baseman. Kalman then scored on a single from
Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.).
Â
Brevard cut Lincoln Memorial's lead in half in the bottom of the sixth, as Christian Dix, Ryan Smith and John Slade singled to load the bases, and Kody Spencer was walked to break Brevard into the scoring column.
Â
Jean struck out the side in the seventh and the Railsplitters gave themselves some breathing room with three runs in the top of the eighth.
Kyle Floyd (Windsor, Ill.) drove in a run with a double into left center, while Augustine plated two runs with a single down the right-field line.
Â
Brevard got a run back on a run-scoring fielder's choice in the bottom of that inning, but the Railsplitters responded with a seven-run explosion in the top of the ninth.
Jonathan Lowe (Sidney, Ohio),
Ryan Burlison (Romeoville, Ill.),
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.), Floyd and Kalman each contributed RBI singles in that inning, as the Tornados needed three pitchers to record three outs in that inning.
Â
The Tornados recorded a single hit without a run in the bottom of the ninth.
Â
Floyd and Burlison contributed three hits apiece, while
Scott Miller (Knoxville, Tenn.), Augustine, Kalman and Valdez posted two hits apiece. The Railsplitters finished with a season-high 17 hits. Lincoln Memorial has previously recorded 16 hits four different times.
Â
Game Two: Brevard 3, Lincoln Memorial 2Â
Offense didn't come nearly as easy in game two, as the Railsplitters were limited to a season-low three hits by Brevard starter Zac Joyce. Joyce went all seven innings, allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts and four walks.
Â
The Tornados did every bit of their damage in the bottom of the third. Slade and Smith singled to put a pair of runners on with one out, and Joseph Mesi walked to load the bases two batters later. Dix then cleared the bases and staked Brevard to a 3-0 lead with a double to straightaway center field.
Â
The Railsplitters finally got something going in the top of the sixth, with Neiderland walking and Valdez singling to kick off that frame. Miller put Lincoln Memorial on the board with a single through the right side of the infield, and Lowe added another run with an RBI groundout. The Railsplitters kept that inning going and put runners on second and third with two outs, but a lineout ended the threat.
Â
Lincoln Memorial gave itself one final chance to tie it up in the visitor's half of the seventh, as Neiderland doubled with two outs to put the tying run 180 feet from home. But a fly out ended the contest.
Â
Grant Painter (Knoxville, Tenn.) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight hits and three earned runs in five innings of work. He struck out two and walked three over that span.
Â
Dix, Slade and Smith led the Tornados with two hits apiece, while Dix drove in three of the game's five runs.
Â
The Railsplitters and Tornados complete their three-game set on Sunday with a single nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m.
