HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Freshmen
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) and
Autumn Beddington (Newburgh, Ind.) combined for three goals on Saturday afternoon as the Lincoln Memorial University women's lacrosse team (0-2, 0-2 SAC) dropped a 16-3 decision to the Coker Cobras (4-2, 2-1 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference action at Byerly Park in Hartsville, S.C.
The Cobras jumped out on the Lady Railsplitters early into the contest when Haley McCusker found nylon just 27 seconds into the match, tallying the first of her five goals on the afternoon. Following McCusker's opening strike, Coker managed to roll off a 12-0 scoring run before James got the Lady Railsplitters on the board with back-to-back goals in the final six minutes of the half to narrow the margin to 12-2 at the break.
Following a Coker goal to open the start of the second half, Beddington found net for the second straight game to cut the Lady Railsplitters' deficit to 13-3 with just under 25 minutes remaining in regulation. The Cobras' attack would prove to be too much to handle, though, as Coker tacked on three more goals in the final minutes to push out to a commanding 16-3 lead.
Lincoln Memorial goalkeeper
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) made it back-to-back 10-save games, as the freshman backstop collected 12 saves while spending all 60 minutes between the pipes.
The Lady Railsplitters finished with seven shots in the contest, with both James and Beddington collecting all seven of those tries. James led the way with six shot attempts, five of which landed on goal.
The Cobras finished with a 36-7 shot disparity, a 35-12 ground ball edge and a 15-6 draw control advantage. Coker finished the day a perfect 4-4 on free position attempts, while the Lady Railsplitters were unable to muster up a free position attempt in the contest.
James paced the Lady Railsplitters with five draw controls.
McCusker recorded five goals and an assist to lead the Cobras. Eight Coker players recorded a goal in the contest, five of which managed to score multiple goals.
Next up, the Lady Railsplitters travel to the Rocky Top Sports World in Gatlinburg, Tenn. to host NAIA member Lawrence Tech for a 12 p.m. match on Tuesday, March 10.
