VOLLEYBALL CENTRAL: Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (3-4, 1-3 SAC) aim to snap a season-long, three-match losing streak against the South Atlantic Conference's current top dog on Tuesday night when they travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. to take on the Carson-Newman Eagles (7-1, 4-0 SAC). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hold Fieldhouse.

Lincoln Memorial suffered a pair of 3-1 setbacks on the road this past weekend to slip below .500 for the season. Offensive efficiency and far too many costly errors, which have been two of LMU's season-long issues, haunted the Lady Railsplitters in those matches, as they hit .158 and combined for 17 reception and service errors on Friday against Queens before compiling a .149 attack percentage with 29 miscues versus Catawba.

In seven matches this season, the Lady Railsplitters have hit above .200 only one time. That was back on September 11 when they hit .203 in a five-set win over Brevard. Lincoln Memorial approached the .200 mark only one other time, in its 3-2 win over Armstrong State (.183). During their current three-match skid, the Lady Railsplitters have hit .099, .158 and .149.

Despite ranking fourth in the SAC in kills per set with 12.21, the Lady Railsplitters are 10th in attack percentage with a cumulative .154 mark.

Sophomore Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) was a bit of a bright spot for the Lady Railsplitters' offense this past weekend as she recorded 13 kills on a .320 attack percentage and 14 digs against Queens before compiling 11 kills and 12 digs versus Catawba. Holland, who led the SAC in errors last season, still struggled to keep the ball in play consistently, though, as she combined for 12 attack errors in those two matches.

Junior setter Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) continued to perform at elite level for the Lady Railsplitters, shaking off a rough outing against Queens to account for 44 assists, 15 digs, five total blocks, four kills and three service aces in the loss to Catawba. She is currently ranked fourth in the SAC in assists per set (9.39) and 16th in digs per set (3.39).

The Eagles are unquestionably the hottest team in the South Atlantic Conference, as they enter Tuesday's contest atop the league standings with a perfect 4-0 mark while riding a six-match winning streak in which they have lost only two total sets. Carson-Newman has not lost a match since dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 18 nationally-ranked Grand Valley State in the season-opening weekend on September 4.

Characteristic of most successful teams, the Eagles create loads of offense while limiting their mistakes. Carson-Newman is hitting .256 in SAC matches, leading the league in that category. They have committed a league-low 28 reception errors with only 130 attack errors, the SAC's third-fewest miscues. The Eagles are ranked third in the SAC in kills per set (13.14) and assists per set (12.11).

Senior outside hitters Sara Fairley and Molly Locke lead the Eagles attacking front. Fairley, who had 16 kills against Catawba and 20 versus Queens last weekend, is ranked third in the SAC with 3.25 kills per set to go along with 2.89 digs per frame. Locke is hitting .258 with 3.00 kills and 3.15 digs per set. Middle blockers Natalie Harris (2.32 kills/set) and Maddie Borch (2.14 k/set) are also contributing more than two kills per frame.

Sophomore setter Anna Patton is second in the SAC in assists per set with 10.39 while adding 2.68 digs per frame. Taylor Lowe leads the Eagles with 4.71 digs per set.

Opponents are hitting just .153 and producing 11.25 kills per set against the Eagles this season. That .153 mark would rank as the second-worst team attack percentage in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Lady Railsplitters and Eagles have met 46 times in the long and storied history of the series, which dates back 24 years to the 1991 season. Lincoln Memorial owns a 29-17 edge all-time, but Carson-Newman has won six of the last 12 meetings and two of the last three in Jefferson City. The Eagles won both matchups in 2014 in straight sets.
