NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Lady Railsplitters (2-7-1, 1-4-1 SAC) played Newberry College (4-8-1, 2-4-1 SAC) to a 1-1 draw Monday in South Atlantic Conference action at the Smith Road Complex in Newberry, S.C. The match was pushed back two days due to Hurricane Matthew.
Palisa Chipendo (Brighton, England) broke a scoreless tie in the 68th minute with her first goal as a Lady Railsplitter. Newberry responded in the 81st minute on Lindsay Huber's first goal of the season.
The two teams ended the first half scoreless despite the Wolves' 10-3 shot advantage.
Isa Jara (Miami, Fla.) nearly put Lincoln Memorial on the board in the seventh minute, but her shot hit the top of the crossbar. Newberry also attempted seven corner kicks to Lincoln Memorial's zero.
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.) made five of her career high-tying nine saves in the half to keep Newberry scoreless.
Newberry opened the second half similar to the first and attempted four shots in the first five minutes, which resulted in a block and three more saves from Lundy. The LMU defense then clamped down and held the Wolves without a shot for the next 20 minutes while attempting seven of their own, the last of which led to Chipendo's goal.
The Wolves immediately went back on the attack. They finally broke through when Huber found some room in the top corner of the box and sent a perfectly placed shot to the top far corner of the goal over Lundy.
Neither team could capitalize in overtime, as several attempts from both sides sailed wide. Shots were even 6-6 over the two overtime periods.
The Lady Railsplitters return home to the LMU Soccer Complex Saturday, October 15, to take on Coker College at 1 p.m. in a South Atlantic Conference showdown. Live stats and video links will be available online at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
