Carpenter scores game-winner to power Lady Railsplitters past Coker in double overtime

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lady Railsplitters (3-7-1, 2-4-1 SAC) edged Coker College (2-8, 1-7 SAC) for a 2-1 double overtime victory Saturday at the LMU Soccer Complex. The win snapped a five-game SAC winless streak for Lincoln Memorial.

Melissa Carpenter (Jacksonville, Fla.) sealed the victory with a breakaway goal early in the second overtime period. She received a pass from Gabby Garcia (Aurora, Colo.) in front of her defender to create the breakaway before beating goalkeeper Shelby Middleton. Carpenter had missed the previous two matches due to a red card suspension.

Alyssa Berry (St. Joseph, Mich.) put the Lady Railsplitters ahead in the ninth minute with her first goal of the season. Palisa Chipendo (Brighton, England) connected with Berry, who was running down the middle of the field, just outside the penalty box. She kept the ball on the ground to beat Middleton to the right.

Lincoln Memorial dominated the rest of the first half and outshot the Cobras 12-3. The Lady Railsplitters also had two other scoring chances in the half but failed to capitalize. In the 17th minute, Chipendo missed an open net high over the goalpost. Jacquelyn Cristoph (Eatonville, Wash.) blasted a free kick just two minutes later that Middleton just got a hand on to knock away.

Coker took momentum back in the second half almost immediately. A defensive miscue gave Ashley Hogg a breakaway goal, her second of the season, less than three minutes in. The goal was Coker's first in six matches—a span of over 500 minutes.

The Lady Railsplitter attack turned up a notch in the first overtime and blasted seven shots over the 10-minute period—three of which were on goal. But none could beat Middleton.

Carpenter finally broke through on Lincoln Memorial's only shot attempt of the second overtime.

In total, Lincoln Memorial attempted a season-high 30 shots while holding Coker to a season-best seven. Of those 30 shot attempts, 12 were on-goal, which was also a season high.

The Lady Railsplitters next travel to Mars Hill, N.C. Saturday, October 15, to take on the Lions of Mars Hill University Wednesday at 3 p.m. in another SAC matchup. Live stats and video links will be available online at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
